Randall Smith will open
“Thoughts in a Dream”, a show of new work at Orlando’s
Terrace Galley on September 14,, 2009. The gallery is
located in Orlando’s City Hall. There will be an opening
reception on Thursday September 17, 2009 from 5:30-8:00.
There is no charge for the event.
This new body of work is a
continuation of a series Smith began in the early 1990’s
called The Tableau Series. The series began as sepia toned
photographs and eventually moved into color. Randall Smith’s
most recent work of large format photography is a series of
individual tableaux inspired by personal experiences and
ideas encompassing a slightly unexpected twist. “I am
enjoying the process necessary for this series. The images
begin as an assemblage of found objects and end up as a 2D
account of the assembled scene,” explains Smith.
Smith earned a bachelor’s
degree in fine arts from the University of Central Florida,
with a major in drawing and a minor printmaking, and an
associate degree from Seminole Community College. He has
attended various workshops and lectures pertaining to
photography, art and marketing.

Statement
“We are the products of our own imaginations.”
Chasing that creative
moment has always been the driving force behind the art
I produce. There are always new processes to experiment
with. Engaging the viewer to build their own story is a
very important aspect of my work. Works of various media
interest and influence my process leading to new
directions. Several of my favorite artists are Duchamp,
Rothko, Hopper and Oldenburg. The diversity and
uniqueness of what they have created has given me many
moments of inspiration and spiritual contemplation.
The work presented here
is a continuation of The Tableau Series which started as
sepia toned black and white prints in the early 1990’s.
My world has changed, but the idea of producing an image
that evokes a response has not. I have had a renewed
interest in creating worlds that only exist for the
briefest of moments, engulfed in light and shadow. The
tableaux are about us; what I believe most people want
and truly believe in. As a viewer you are challenged to
see yourself and a slightly different world within the
image.
The photos start as
studio sets, constructed to last the brief time the
shutter is open. The images are not constructed in
Photoshop. The finished prints are produced either as
standard C-Prints or archival inkjet on a variety of
papers.
