Orlando City Hall Mayor’s Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to a vanishing piece of Americana: the Barber Shop. The Central Florida Barber Shop Documentary and Barber Story by Penny Jordan showcases local barbers and their storefronts in hand printed black and white photographs, as well as historic images. Barbershops traditionally functioned as social centers for their communities and select shops from Apopka to Kissimmee are represented in the exhibition, The project was funded in part by a Professional Development Grant from United Arts, and was first shown at Crealdé earlier this year. Also, there are additional photographs in the documentary which will be on display. The exhibition dates are from September 26 through December 14, 2011. Meet and greet reception on September 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Mayor’s Gallery, 3rd Floor, 400 South Orange Avenue, City Hall, Orlando, FL 32801.

“Living in a small town as a child, and remembering the sense of community and tradition offers a place of belonging,” says Jordan. “Barbershops are simple places where generations have come together and stayed connected. When the rest of the world is running, the barber is waiting for the next story to be told from his chair. It’s in the story we find a piece of ourselves we long to remember and share.”

Penny Jordan is a documentary photographer from Central Florida, and a member of the Board of Directors at Crealdé. She is currently working on a new multi-year project: a look at commercial flying from both above and under the clouds.
