Orlando Mayor Dyer to Plant the 10,000th Tree Since 2004 Hurricanes

WHAT: Orlando Mayor Dyer will "work-along" with the City’s Parks Division employees to plant the final tree of the 10,000 Trees Initiative, part of the effort to restore the urban tree canopy damage incurred by the hurricanes of 2004. The project will successfully meet its goal of replacing the 10,000 trees lost in Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jean by the year 2010. City Commissioners have been planting final trees in their districts over the past week and will come together to join the Mayor in planting the 10,000th tree in Wadeview Park.

The City of Orlando’s Families, Parks and Recreation Department, Green-up Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful, Inc., launched the 10,000 Trees Initiative, a tree replacement strategy to keep Orlando beautiful. The goal of the 10,000 Trees Initiative was designed to replace the urban canopy in the Orlando community by 2010, so that the long-term effects of the storms in 2004 are minimized and Orlando remains “The City Beautiful.”
