Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center History

Highlights:

The Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center offers something for everyone as well as an amphitheater that is great for community performances. Come over and enjoy our game room activities that included: ping-pong, bumper pool, swimming pool, chess, checkers and card games.

Programs:

Advanced Teen Program (ATP): This program is designed for 9th - 12th graders as the next step after the Middle Teen Program. It provides young adults with college and work force awareness through regular meetings, SAT and ACT preparation, financial aid seminars, college tours to nearby colleges and universities, job fairs, career exploration, community clean up, fundraisers and field trips.

Camp Orlando Summer Camp (ages 5 - 14): a safe and affordable summer camp program for youth. This five-day week program at 16 City recreation centers offers a variety of activities, including swimming, crafts, outdoor activities, nature programs, exciting field trips (additional expense), computer labs, arts and crafts, and special events. Sites may offer different activities according to the interests of the children who participate in programs.  

Chucky Atkins Basketball Academy (CABA) (ages 5-14):  This is a basketball Camp that will be teaching kids the fundamentals of basketball and different drills. League play will also be provided in the camp.

Computer Lab (all ages): Offering open lab for research, resume writing, homework, internet access, and other activities.

Midnight Basketball (16 and up): In a partnership with The Center for Drug Free Living, we offer this prevention program that provides youth with positive, alternative late night activities, such as Open Gym basketball, on Saturdays from 8 pm - midnight.

MTP (Middle-School Teen Program) (ages 11 - 14): A diverse teen program for youth in middle school. The program features computers, homework assistance, workshops, regular meetings, service projects, game room activities, art, field trips, and athletic activities. Youth will have opportunities to develop leadership skills and gain cultural diversity awareness through MTP activities. 

OASIS (Orlando After School Is Super) (ages 5 - 10): An after-school program for youth ages 5 to 10 that provides supervised activities for elementary school age children. Children can have access to opportunities such as homework assistance, computer labs, game rooms, cultural arts, pottery, arts and crafts, dance recitals and field trips to local attractions, football, and basketball games.


School Vacation Daze (ages 5- 14): Coincides with school breaks from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.  Are you wondering what to do during school holidays? Well, we have fun activities for your kids! Enjoy crafts, outdoor activities, game rooms, and much more during the traditional traditional Orange County Public School vacation calendar year. Register at site prior to school holidays.

Rentals and Public Use:

Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center offers certain rooms within the facility for rent for events such as birthday parties, meetings, showers, and so on.
  • Gymnasium - $65 per hour - Capacity 680
  • Community Room - $50 per hour - Capacity 161
  • Multi-Purpose Room - $30 per hour - Capacity 50
  • Teen Room - $30 per hour - Capacity 50
  • Amphitheatre - $25 per hour - Capacity 125
  • Kitchen - $15 per hour
  • Softball Field - $15 per hour
  • Pool - $50 per hour plus $15 per hour for lifeguard (minimum 2)
Rental Policy and Procedures
  • $100 Damage Deposit Required. Deposit will be refunded 4 to 6 weeks after rental if no damage was found after the rental.
  • Insurance is not refundable and prices range from $31 to $80 and will protect any injuries that may happen during the rental.
  • No Alcoholic Beverages allowed.
  • All rentals must be scheduled 14 days prior to event.
  • All rentals must be paid in full at time of booking.
  • Rentals must be cancelled at least 72 hours prior to event to receive a refund.
Public Use
  • Fitness Center memberships are available at daily, monthly, six month, and annual rates. For more information, call the Center.
  • Game Room and Computer Lab are open to the public at no charge during operational hours.
  • The Game Room and Computer Lab will close for the OASIS and MTP after school programs from August through May from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
