Love of Life
Works by Donna Dowless and Marlene London

March 1 to May 28, 2007
Mayor’s 2nd and 3rd Floor Gallery at Orlando City Hall

Exhibition Overview

Both award-winning artists share interests in the everyday items and experiences that few take the time to explore. At first glance many of these works may appear whimsical and high-spirited; beyond the surface subjects such as societal expectations and the search for life’s purpose will be revealed.

Artist Bios

Donna Dowless

“My approach to painting varies with each piece. The richness and depth of tones and textures are achieved by applying layers of color washes, acrylics, oil pastels, India ink, and translucent glazes with various tools. My finished work reveals itself after the layers settle into one. My art is meant to extract an invitation to the viewer to visualize special moments in his or her own life."        -Donna Dowless

Andy Warhol once personally advised, “You are an artist in your heart, so be it!” The experience must have left an indelible mark on this artist because few uphold the mantra with more passion than celebrated artist Donna Dowless. Donna’s self-taught contemporary art has been shown throughout Florida, in such locations as the Grand Bohemian Gallery, Avalon Gallery, The Orlando Museum of Art Gift Shop Gallery and the King Center Gallery located in Melbourne, Florida. Her work is included in the private collections of Rosie O'Donnell, Cher, Naomi Judd, Celine Dion and Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.

Marlene London

“I build worlds in which I am able to live… where I find meaning in bright red nails clicking on the table, where the smell of rain is to me the same as home, where womanhood is celebrated, and where an eggplant has a prominent place on this earth. Life is color and composition, texture and guts, and my goal as an artist is to thread it all together into one expressive, viewable moment. The mundane and ignored are elevated and celebrated for their simple beauty.” -Marlene London

Marlene London’s layered works of paint wax, collage and writing act as a sounding board for the viewer, aptly mirroring complicated processes of thought. Marlene holds an English degree from Skidmore College and has studied art throughout the country with notable artists such as Squeak Carnwath, Wolf Kahn, Katherine Porter and Charles Garabedian. In addition to numerous exhibits throughout Florida, London’s work was also exhibited in Milan, Italy, at the Post Art “Orlando Furioso” exhibition, where she was one of only 19 artists representing Central Florida. Her artwork has been used for the Berlin Wall Project, the City of Orlando’s “Commemorative Plate,” the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Poster and the first annual Power of the Purse fundraiser. Her work has been added to the private collections of former Secretary of State of Florida, Glenda Hood and comedian Chris Rock. Marlene is represented in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Tampa, The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art gift gallery and the Orlando Museum of Art gift shop. She is also the recipient of a United Arts grant, which helped the artist implement an exhibit by bicultural women, shown both in Central Florida and in Mexico City.
