Dawn Wicklow, Artist’s Statement (June 2015)
“I paint because I believe that art can bring more focus to what is beautiful in the world, and in so doing, help make it better, more loving and peaceful place. Painting brings me into the moment in a visceral and vital way. Using East Asian brush techniques, I find a calm center and trust the simplicity of the brush stroke, knowing that “it is what it is and it is as it should be.” Translating that to working with alcohol ink on Yupo paper (plastic as opposed to paper) is exciting, as the various ink colors respond differently to each other, moving and mixing in often unexpected ways. Going with the flow and taking direction from the ink’s interactions, always yield the most exciting pieces.”
