See Art Orlando

On November 18, 2013, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the See Art Orlando Board of Directors unveiled Orlando’s permanent, contemporary sculpture collection. The nine iconic sculptures that are part of the See Art Orlando collection were designed to enhance the aesthetic experience and cultural image of Downtown Orlando, as well as be inspired by various elements of Orlando and embodying the diverse fabric of the city.

Supported by private philanthropy, See Art Orlando is thought to be the largest permanent sculpture collection of different pieces by different artists under construction at one time.

Pieces in the collection are of all different sizes and are crafted from a variety of mediums ranging from stainless steel to limestone with features that incorporate kinetic energy, solar power and LED lights.

Located on Central Boulevard at Lake Eola Park

Centered is a bold monumental sculpture made of eight individual forms arching in perfect balance with a kinetic yellow center able to spin in the wind. Because each piece of this sculpture is fabricated in various widths and colors, Centered seems to change its shape from every angle it is viewed. Centered holds many meanings that apply to Orlando including the city being the center of activity for the entire Central Florida region.

The Discovery is a monumental sculpture made from earth and stone that portrays a young reclining woman gazing at her opened hand, which is large enough for a child or adult to sit allowing its visitors to be part of the sculpture. The Discovery is a fanciful and interactive piece that excites the imagination of all its viewers.

Monument in Right Feet Major

Located at Central Boulevard and Eola Drive at Lake Eola Park

Monument in Right Feet Major portrays a young man in spontaneous movement and is a tribute to dance. The young man, sculpted from bronze, has a much larger lower body than upper body, creating the illusion of his immense size and weight. Monument in Right Feet Major emphasizes how when humans dance, our feet take us in the right direction to make the right action without thinking.

Astrogenesis II

Astrogenesis II by Wendy Ross and sponsored by DeVos Family Foundations

Located on South Orange Avenue and Church Street

Rising nearly 30 feet into the sky, Astrogenesis II is comprised of four metal trusses which support an assemblage of steel triangular florets meant to resemble a star. The star will shimmer during the day as the florets that comprise the star provide a spectrum of color in natural lighting and the star will be lit with LED lights at night. Astrogenesis II speaks to the manifestation of energy and evokes aspects of the botanical world. Like a plant reaching and turning toward the light and beyond, it represents a flowering of the possible.

Global Convergence

Located at Central Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue

Global Convergence depicts a large globe made of industrial strength aluminum panels which have been screen printed with the colors of the ocean and a school of swimming Shoal Bass, fish native to Florida. The globe is lit with LED lighting to dynamically reflect color into the surrounding space. Global Convergence represents the oceans of diversity which can be found in Orlando’s multicultural population.

Cedar of Lebanon

Located on Central Boulevard at Lake Eola Park

Cedar of Lebanon is a three-story high sculpted tree made from a combination of hand bent sprinkler pipes and mirrored stainless steel canopies that represent the tree’s leaves. The sculpture is lit from within. Cedar of Lebanon represents the natural, earthy elements that can be found throughout Orlando’s vast landscape.

Union

Union by Ralfonso Gschwend sponsored by Harvey & Carol Massey Family

Located at Robinson Street and Eola Drive at Lake Eola Park

Union is a group of six 25-feet tall steel aluminum poles adorned at the top with numerous curved wings that when a small breeze begins to blow moves the wings in an unpredictable fashion. Union is almost always in movement and so each time the sculpture is viewed it never seems the same. Just as life moves in unpredictable ways, Union makes visible the effect and interaction of unseen forces.

Wings of Protection

Wings of Protection by Linda Howard

Located at South Street and Orange Blossom Trail

This sculpture is designed to be reflective of the service provided by the City of Orlando police officers to their community. The sculpture also provides an appropriate site for ceremonial activities at the Orlando Police Department.
