Orlando Fire Department resources | Take the Fire Prevention Week quiz
ORLANDO (CityofOrlando.net) – Fires have the potential of destroying homes and taking lives. Accidents happen, whether from cooking, candles, smoking or electrical problems. October 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week and is a great opportunity for residents and businesses to make sure that they are ready in case of an emergency.
A good place to start is to test smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. Most people aren’t aware of a fire in their homes until too late. Smoke spreads fast, residents and businesses need to check their smoke alarm batteries and make sure it functions.
Residents should also be aware of escape routes in case of a fire. Most people only have a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds so it’s important to plan ahead if a fire breaks out.
Unexpected fires can happen to anyone and taking the necessary steps to keep safe will go a long way. The Orlando Fire Department and the City of Orlando encourages residents and businesses to be informed and stay safe.
