The Orlando Police Department has received the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) High Visibility Enforcement Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Grant for the second year. The grant amount is $59,000, which will cover overtime efforts to increase the focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety in the City of Orlando from November 2014 to June 2015.
Last year, the grant covered a period from March through August. It yielded 4,021 pedestrian, 533 vehicle and 414 bicycle violations during the time period.
The grant will allow officers to work overtime hours while they concentrate their efforts more on the following types of enforcement:
- Motorists not yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalks (especially when turning)
- Pedestrians not utilizing crosswalks and intersections and not obeying pedestrian control devices
- Bicyclists not obeying traffic laws
