The City of Orlando and the Orlando Police Department have been recognized for their National Night Out efforts. Orlando placed second in the nation among cities with population between 100,000 – 299,000 by the National Association of Town Watch for its 2014 National Night Out efforts.
Introduced in 1984, National Night Out promotes involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
In August, Orlando neighborhoods hosted nearly 300 events with more than 63,000 residents participating. As part of National Night Out, the Orlando Police Department held 26 women’s self defense classes and a women’s self defense summit, seven National Night Out Goes to Summer Camp parties, three National Night Out Kickoff parties and two senior celebrations.
