Learn more about the Pottery Studio
ORLANDO (CityofOrlando.net) – Having everything that a potter needs to create art at an affordable price, the Pottery Studio is open to the public and making a positive impact on the quality of life in Orlando. Located in Downtown, the City’s Pottery Studio has seemed like a hidden secret, but since 1968, the studio has provided an open atmosphere for residents to explore, learn and create.
The Pottery Studio has eight instructors who teach throughout the studio. “I work with a group of fantastic individuals who have a love and technical knowledge of art,” Cultural Arts Coordinator Jason Sugiuchi said. “The instructors spend so much time helping the studio and teaching. Pottery is technical. There are a lot of things to monitor and it is so important that our teachers understand the technical side in order to help people.”
Some of the instructors teach six-week classes on a variety of pottery skills for beginners to experienced potters. The Pottery Studio offers a number of children’s camps and after-school programs. All classes and camps have an affordable price which includes clay and molding materials.
The atmosphere of the studio is full of creativity. The Pottery Studio is a place to express yourself and to try something new. “People start out timid within the classes and then start becoming comfortable with creating in open studio,” Sugiuchi said
The studio offers intro and intermediate hand building, wheel throwing, painting on silk, precious metal clay jewelry making, mixed media and pottery decorating classes and continues to bring in teachers to expand its schedule. Anytime the studio is open, people are free to come for open studio which has the materials to freely create when it best fits into their schedule.
“The Pottery Studio provides a place for artists to come and enthusiasts to experience art. We keep it a place where art exists and keeps art within the community,” Sugiuchi said. “We have amazing artists that have come with the visiting artist series. It has been an important part with the Orlando arts for a long time.” Through the visiting artist series, well known artists come to the studio to teach classes or have demonstrations within the fully functioning studio.
“People do art for themselves and for fun. The Pottery Studio is a place to express yourself and feel comfortable to express yourself. I don’t care what your skill level may be. I am going to support you and cheer you on. I love seeing people create and seeing people make art,” Sugiuchi said.
The Pottery Studio is completely accessible, affordable and is a place where professionals and beginners can work alongside each other. The Pottery Studio is about having a fun experience while creating.
