ORLANDO (CityofOrlando.net) – A group of young City residents are in the running for a national community service award. The Engelwood Girls Club is among the 27 national finalists for the Jefferson Awards Lead 360 Challenge.
The club organized a lemonade stand to raise money to purchase groceries for members of the Seniors First program. The group of girls worked together to create and promote their lemonade stand, raising nearly $200 selling cups of lemonade for 25 cents each. All funds collected were donated to local seniors at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center.
The girls need help in order to reach the top five for the Jefferson Awards Lead 360 Challenge as the winners will be determined by online voting.
The contest closes at midnight on Wednesday, May 21. Individuals can vote once per day and the top five finalists will be announced on May 22. The five finalists will attend the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony in Washington, D.C., and may win cash prizes up to $500.
The Engelwood Girls Club is a mentoring program for fourth and fifth grade girls. The program focuses on teamwork and building friendly relationships with each other and the community.
The Jefferson Awards recognize youth who create and implement service projects for communities throughout the United States. For over 41 years, the Jefferson Awards have recognized and inspired tens of thousands of local heroes for their great works in their communities.
