Every ten years, the City of Orlando has to redraw its commission
boundaries based on the federal Census. The basic purpose of
redistricting is to ensure each City Commission district has equal
population distribution in an effort to assure equality in
representation. The Orlando City Council appointed a volunteer
Redistricting Advisory Board (RAB) consisting of nine members. The RAB
has been tasked with recommending new commission boundaries to City
Council in October. The RAB will make their recommendation based on
federal, state and city regulations and public input. The redistricting
population being used is 238,916, which is based on the 2010 Census; to
determine the ideal population for each of the City’s commission
districts, you divide the 238,916 by 6, which is 39,819 as the
population goal for each of the districts for this redistricting
process.
The public is encouraged to attend all the RAB meetings. At these
meetings, the public will have an opportunity to speak and present their
own redistricting ideas. See below for meeting dates, times and
locations.
