Items of Note:
Anti Terrorism and Emergency Assistance Program Grant & Amendment to the City’s agreement with Heart of Florida United Way for the OUAC
A few months back, it was announced our community would be receiving grant funds to support our immediate response and to continue providing critical assistance to the victims following the Pulse tragedy.
On Monday, council voted on an agreement that will allow the City to be the recipient of those funds, which will help us recoup funds we used in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
Additionally, there is an amendment to the agreement with the Heart of Florida United Way, which reaffirms that a portion of our funding will be to continue operating the Orlando United Assistance Center. This grant will help ensure the OUAC continues to operate through the end of 2020.
Our Orlando United Assistance Center continues to serve as the central resource hub to connect those directly impacted to a wide array of services available to assist them in their recovery. The OUAC serves more than 320 clients and has an average of 160 appointments each month.
We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Justice and the state’s Attorney General’s office for this grant funding … and for partnerships like that with the Heart of Florida United way that continue to serve those impacted on June 12.
Computer Aided Dispatch Supplier Selection
City Council approved an for the implementation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch system that will utilize next generation technology for our 911 system.
The new system will integrate both OPD and OFD into a unified dispatch system that will increase operational efficiency, interagency collaboration and further enhance the safety of our residents.
Much of City staff worked very hard on this initiative and brining this innovative technology to our City. Mayor Buddy Dyer thanked all who worked so hard to help us to continue to provide our community with exceptional service.
Temp Use Permit for West Arts District
We as a City are extremely supportive of public art, including murals, and the unique impact they have in our community, helping to create vibrancy and place-making.
Council approved an item that will allow us to explore an expansion of our mural program and help further this creative expression.
Working together with the West Orlando Arts District property owners, we’ve developed a temporary use permit to allow for art to remain on the buildings there, with minor modifications, and to use this specific site as a test pilot as we continue to study this type of mural structure and its impacts.
Mayor Dyer thanked Commissioner Hill for her leadership on this project and look forward to continuing to grow the arts together.
Funding for Social Enterprise Accelerator
Also on Monday’s agenda was an item to support the new Central Florida Social Enterprise Accelerator, a new six-month program to support the startup and growth of social enterprise companies, which are companies that exist to solve social, environmental and economic challenges.
The accelerator will provide these startups with the support, programming and mentorship, to help grow their product or business into self-sustainable ventures, in turn, creating new jobs for residents and improving the quality of life in Central Florida.
The accelerator is a partnership led by two of Orlando’s most successful social enterprise companies – Clean the World and CREDO Coffee.
