On Monday, January 9, the City declared a day of mourning after the tragic loss of Master Sergeant Debra Clayton of the Orlando Police Department and Norman Lewis an Orange County Deputy Sheriff, both killed in the line of duty.
Due to these tragic events, Monday’s City Council workshop and meeting were cancelled. On Wednesday, January 11, City Council considered the consent agenda from Monday’s meeting.
All ordinances, hearings and other items that were to be considered Monday will be moved to the meeting on Monday, January 23, 2017.
Mayor Buddy Dyer called for a moment of silence for both officers to start Wednesday’s meeting.
Master Sgt Clayton
Monday was a difficult day for us all as we suffered the senseless loss of Master Sargent Debra Clayton who died courageously trying to take a violent criminal off the streets.
Master Sergeant Clayton was a brave, 17-year member of the Orlando Police Department, and her loss will be felt throughout the department and the entire City of Orlando.
More importantly she will be missed as a mother, wife, daughter and sister. Mayor Dyer shared his condolences and prayers with her family.
Her legacy will live on through all of us. We will never forget her service to our community and the lives, especially the children, she influenced with her giving heart.
Mayor Dyer also thanks the men and women of the Orlando Police and Fire Departments for their response.
Passing of Commissioner Ortiz’ Father
Mayor Dyer also expressed his deep condolences to Commissioner Ortiz after the loss of his father Angel Luis Ortiz who passed away Tuesday, January 10. Mr. Ortiz was a member of the US Army, a very successful businessman and also a heroic law enforcement official in Puerto Rico. Mr. Ortiz leaves an incredible legacy in his family and will be remembered as a committed family man; a loving father; an unparalleled son; a loyal friend; an amazing caring humanitarian; and a faithful man of God.
