Legislative Session Update
As you know, the recent legislative session was one of the most contentious ones for local governments. There was a barrage of bills filed that would prohibit our ability to govern our city.
Kathy Russell, our City’s Director of Intergovernmental Relations, and our legislative team, presented City Council with a detailed PowerPoint recapping the 2017 legislative session.

Proclaiming Orlando United Day – A Day of Love and Kindness
It is hard to believe it has almost been one year since the Pulse tragedy happened here in our City. At times it still seems incomprehensible.
Next Monday, our community will stand together again to honor the memory of the 49 innocent lives taken from us too soon and support the families of the victims and survivors. We’ve designated June 12 as Orlando United Day – A Day of Love and Kindness. On this day, there are a number of community events and activities in which you can participate. A full listing of events is available at orlandounitedday.com.
We are also encouraging the community to participate in Acts of Love and Kindness – a homegrown movement led by the One Orlando Alliance with direct input from victims’ families.

Moment of Silence
On Monday June, 5, violence touched our Central Florida region as five innocent people lost their lives at a business on North Forsyth Road.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, the survivors and everyone impacted by this act of workplace violence.
We are grateful for the quick actions of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as deputies quickly responded to the scene.
To honor these victims, as well as the lives taken during recent terrorist attacks in England, Mayor Buddy Dyer led a moment of silence.
Acknowledge Smart Cities Council Representatives Present
Earlier this year, Orlando was designated one of five Smart Cities by the Smart Cities Council, the world’s largest smart cities network.
Orlando was selected because of our commitment to using smart technologies to seek innovative ways to better connect with and meet the needs of our residents.
As part of this designation, the City will receive tailored guidance on how to further develop and implement a comprehensive approach to applying smart technologies in Orlando and throughout Central Florida.
We are fortunate to have a number of Smart Cities Council representatives currently in Orlando meeting with staff and other partners.

Mayor Dyer spoke about two items that were on Monday’s agenda both of which, he said, will further the City’s commitment to bring quality and affordable housing options to residents and encourage quality redevelopment in City neighborhood.
First One Hundred Apartment Purchase
This item provides a mechanism for the City to acquire ownership and control of six apartment complexes located along Orange Center Boulevard which recently filed bankruptcy.
The condition of the properties has been a concern that has weighed heavily on our residents and this action will help to stabilize our neighborhoods by allowing us to eventually partner with community development organizations interested in constructing sustainable, mixed-income housing at these sites that complement the surrounding neighborhoods.
Mayor Dyer said he is looking forward to working with Commissioner Ings, Commissioner Hill and City residents on the future redevelopment of this area.
Ranking and Contract Negotiations for Design-Build Services for CRA Parramore Residential Housing, RFP17-0247
Council also voted to approve the rankings of design-build firms to build ten new single family homes in Parramore.
The homes are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018 and after construction is complete, the City will sell the homes to qualified, income-eligible homebuyers.
This project further supports the City’s effort to increase housing opportunities in Parramore and owner occupant housing and aligns with recommendations from the recently completed Parramore Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan.
