Regarding the Summerlin/Richmond Street Construction Project
Please see the following statement regarding this construction project from Rick Howard, Public Works Director for the City of Orlando.
The City has dedicated enormous resources managing the contractor in this project, their progress has been in deficit for several months. Our Construction Managers and Field Inspectors have been at the jobsite on a constant basis. The City is not permitted to dictate means and methods to the contractor and, in this case, the process has been painfully slow. Gomez Construction, normally one of our better contractors, has been notified their substantial completion date, September 24, has passed and they are subject to liquidated damages of $500.00 per day. Their surety has also been notified.
The City will likely encourage Gomez Construction to complete the reconstruction of Summerlin and the utility work on Richmond Street. No other work will be permitted in the neighborhood until these streets are complete. At that time a decision will be made to pursue the many alternatives we have to complete the construction. I apologize for the delays and the disruption to the neighborhood. I know it has been an unpleasant process but, when all is said and done, this will be a substantial improvement and help reduce the incidence of flooding.
