District 2 Fall Cleanup
On Saturday, November 2, 2013 Commissioner Tony Ortiz, his Aide, Ana L. Cruz, OPD Liaison Officer Eddie Rosado and Keep Orlando Beautiful, Mrs. Jody Buyas joined a group of volunteers and cleaned the area from Curry Ford Road and Semoran Boulevard to the Stonewall Jackson Road intersection.
Fourteen bags of garbage were collected on that day.
After-School All-Stars Kids Classic Golf Event
Commissioner Tony Ortiz participated during the 2013 After-School All-Star Golf Kids Classic. This year's tournament was at the Grand Cypress Golf Course.
Commissioner Ortiz sponsored a hole during the event.
2013 District 2 Fall Festival
More than 300 residents, from District 2, attended the 2013 District 2 Fall Festival, celebrated at the Jackson Middle School Track Field.
The attendees enjoyed an evening of music, games, exhibitors and food.
OUC Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center Tour
A group of District 2 Neighborhood Leaders Council members participated at the OUC Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center, off Alafaya Trail, on October 14, 2013.
Mr. Jan Aspuru, Vice President of Electric & Water Production and Mr. Wade Gillingham, Director Power Production welcomed and guided the group on that day.
Semoran Boulevard Improvements Project Completion
Orlando Mayor Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz celebrated the completion of the Semoran Boulevard Improvements Project by placing the last final paver.
The completion of the Semoran Boulevard Improvements project signifies a milestone in the vision plan for the Semoran Corridor, the main gateway for visitors to the Orlando community. Developed under Commissioner Ortiz’s leadership, the Semoran Boulevard Vision Plan is a long-term guide for future developments and improvements in the area.
Through the vision plan process, the City and Commissioner Ortiz have helped the Semoran neighborhood shape the community’s future by positioning it for future development. Through revitalization efforts such as these, Semoran Boulevard will be prepared for future growth.
MOCERT Food Bank
Commissioner Tony Ortiz visited a Food Bank on District 2. This Food Bank is managed by Mr. Sergio Padilla, Coordinator of the Metro Orlando Hispanic CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team). Mr. Padilla partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank and have been helping close to 100 families every week.
They are located at 427-H Gaston Foster and are open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.
CAC - Florida Medical Center Grand Opening
On Friday, September 27, 2013 CAC - Florida Medical Center opened their first Orlando location to the public on District 2.
Located at 737 South Semoran Boulevard, the centers operate in a staff-model setting whereby routine medical and ancillary health care services are provided “under one roof” and orchestrated by primary care physicians.
Consulate of Mexico in Orlando 203rd Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence Celebration
On Sunday, September 15, 2013, Commissioner Tony Ortiz's Aide, Ana L. Cruz, joined City of Orlando Multicultural Affairs Director, Luis Martinez and Consul of Mexico in Orlando, Mr. Efren Leyva and presented to him a City of Orlando Proclamation. The Consulate of Mexico celebrated the 203rd Anniversary of Mexico's Independence with an event that consisted of live Mexican music, Mariachi, folkloric dance, Mexican food and the traditional "Grito de Independencia" - "Cry of Independence."
Engelwood Clean Up
On Saturday, September 14, 2013, District 2 Team: Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Liaison Officer Eddie Rosado and Aide, Ana L. Cruz joined the Engelwood Park Neighborhood Association for their annual Clean Up event.
2013 City of Orlando 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Kickoff Event and Hispanic Art Exhibition Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Tony Ortiz welcomed the attendees to the 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Kickoff event celebrated on September 5, 2013 at the City Hall Rotunda. More than 400 people attended the event and also participated during the first Hispanic Artist Art Exhibition ribbon cutting ceremony.
WaWa Lee Vista Opening
On August 29, 2013, Commissioner Ortiz joined our Mayor Dyer during the ribbon cutting ceremony of a new WaWa Store located in the corner of South Semoran Boulevard and Lee Vista.
Engelwood Community Center Backpack Event
Commissioner Tony Ortiz brought backpacks with school supplies donated by the Orlando Magic to 150 children who attended the Engelwood Neighborhood Center Summer Program.

Dover Shores Community Center Backpack Event
Commissioner Ortiz provided backpacks with school supplies to 200 children who attended the Dover Shores Community Center Summer Program. The theme on that Friday was Star Wars. Some children, staff and special guests wore Star Wars' costumes.
Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration Kissimmee Office Opening
Commissioner Tony Ortiz welcomed the new Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration office to the City of Kissimmee. He was present during their ribbon cutting ceremony. From this office, various services, such as assistance with Birth Certificates, will be provided to the Puertoricans who live in the Central Florida region.
District 2 Special Community Town Hall Meeting
A District 2 Special Community Town Hall meeting was celebrated on August 22, 2013 at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center. Special guests who attended the meeting were Orange County District 3 Commissioner Pete Clarke, City of Orlando Attorney, Mr. Kyle Shephard and Downtown Development Board Executive Director, Mr. Thomas Chatmon. The topics discussed during the meeting were Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and Neighborhood Improvement District.
2013 Excellence Assisted Living Groundbreaking
On Thursday, August 1, 2013, Commissioner Tony Ortiz attended the ground breaking ceremony of Excellence Assisted Living Facility in District 2. The facility will be opening by December 2014 and will provide 85 full time jobs.
District 2 National Night Out Against Crime Kickoff Party 7-25-2013 at Sedano's
On July 25, 2013, we celebrated our first District 2 National Night Out Against Crime Kickoff event at the parking of Sedano's Supermarket. The event was a prelude to the National Night Out Against Crime Annual event that was celebrated on August 6, 2013.
The event was an opportunity for the community to spend some time and meet Orlando Police Officers, community leaders and elected officials in an atmosphere of comradeship.
District 2 Neighborhood Leaders Council Meeting
On July 18, 2013 we had our bi-monthly Neighborhood Leaders Council meeting. During this meeting, we had representatives from MetroPlan Orlando who gave a presentation about transportation in Orlando.

National Latino Peace Officers Association National Conference
Commissioner Tony Ortiz presented the key to the City of Orlando to world-known salsa singer, Frankie Negron, during the 40th National Latino Peace Officers Association National Conference Gala celebrated here, in Orlando, on June 29, 2013.
Close to 300 law enforcement officers met in Orlando during this year's conference.
Johnson Manor Father's Day Celebration
On Friday, June 14, 2013, Commissioner Tony Ortiz attended the Johnson Manor Seniors' Father's Day Celebration. The celebration took place at the Johnson Manor's Activity Room.
Engelwood Neighborhood Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Renovated Soccer Corral
On Thursday, June 13th, Commissioner Tony Ortiz and the District 2 Youth Soccer Team cut the ribbon that officially opened the renovated Engelwood Neighborhood Center Soccer Corral.
The new 50’ x 80’ soccer corral sod was installed at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center through a partnership between Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Coca-Cola and the City of Orlando’s Families, Parks and Recreation Division (FPR). Coca-Cola donated $10,000 to the Orlando Community and Youth Trust, Inc. (OCYT) to assist in rebuilding the Engelwood Soccer Corral. The soccer corral features SportsGrass which is top of the line sports turf with unmatched realism. SportsGrass allows athletes to play at a higher level and has a natural feel with great durability.
Commissioner Ortiz said, “These are exciting times since our City is going through the soccer fever and we are partnering with Mayor Buddy Dyer to make sure that soccer becomes a reality in the City of Orlando! I am also grateful to Coca-Cola for helping us make improvements to the Engelwood Neighborhood Center’s Soccer Corral. Our children will now have a place to practice and play soccer.”

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Commissioner Jim Gray, Orange County Commissioner Pete Clarke and a group of volunteers participated in a Clean-Up Event organized by the Conway Community Council.
Trash was picked, plants and trees were planted along Curry Ford Road and Conway Road.

Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce "Parranda" At City Hall

Thanks to a donation from the Children's Safety Village and Ms. Juanita E. Black, Commissioner Tony Ortiz was able to donate 22 bicycles to children from District 2.
Bicycles were donated to children from the Engelwood Neighborhood Center, Dover Shores Community Center, Jackson Middle School and participants of the National Latino Peace Officers Association's Annual Three Kings event.

On December 20, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz joined the Seniors of the Engelwood Seniors First program for their annual Holiday Celebration.
Close to 100 seniors participated and had a great time. The food was donated by Wellcare.

Renamed of City Street in Memory of Orlando Police Officer
Officer George Stefan DeSalvia lost his life in the line of duty on February 3, 2000. He was backing up another officer on a traffic stop.
He was always a loyal, hard working officer that served the community with courage, pride and commitment.
On November 21, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz along with Orlando Police Department Chief Paul Rooney announced the street name change to the George DeSalvia Way.

On October 29, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz joined the Orlando International Airport to welcoming TAM Airlines and their new non-stop flights from Orlando to Rio de Janeiro.

On October 25, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz sponsored an Octoberfest Event for District 2 Residents at the Jackson Middle School Track Field. More than 400 people attended the event.
There were bouncing houses, SWAT and Fire Department display units, food and music for the families.
Celebration Colombian Consulate New Orlando Office Opening
On October 16, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz joined the Colombian Foreign Minister, Ms. Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, and Orlando New Consul, Ms. Maria Matilde Londono for the celebration of the grand opening of the new consulate that will serve nearly 200,000 Colombians living in the central and northern Florida.

On October 15, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz was invited by Mr. Samarel, a teacher from the Passport Charter School, to talk to his 6th, 7th and 8th graders about his role as a commissioner.
New Community Business Meeting
On October 9, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz met with the new businesses that were added to District 2, due to the new re-districting. The meeting took place at the Marriott by the Airport Hotel.
More than 15 new businesses attended the presentation and learned about the new projects coming to the Semoran Boulevard and about the Semoran Business Partnership.

On September 18, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz officially opened the new Dover Shores Community Center Playground in front of almost 100 children!
Saltillo, Mexico Visit to the City Beautiful
Commissioner Tony Ortiz, along with Mayor Buddy Dyer and Casa de Mexico President, Mrs. Blanquita Trabold welcomed the wife of Saltillo, Mexico Mayor, Mrs. Bertha Gutierrez to the City of Orlando.
Mrs. Gutierrez traveled from Saltillo to Orlando to attend with a local band of children the Casa de Mexico Annual Concert.
The band played in the City Rotunda on Monday, September 17th.
2012 Florida Coastal Cleanup
Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Officer Eddie Rosado and Commissioner's Aide, Ana L. Cruz participated during the 2012 Florida Coastal Cleanup. They collected garbage from the La Costa Urban Wetlands and Lake Rabama, both in District 2.
Florida League of Cities 86th Annual Conference
The Florida League of Cities honored the City of Orlando as one of the three 2012 winners in the Florida Municipal Achievements Award program.
Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Commissioner Daisy Lynum and Commissioner Samuel Ings accepted the award on behalf of the City Beautiful.
The awards recognize innovations and excellence in municipal government, providing municipalities with an opportunity to receive recognition for superior and innovative efforts in three award categories: City Spirit, Citizenship and Environmental Stewardship.
The Garden Harvest Celebration at Engelwood Community Center
Mayor Dyer joined with Orlando youth, volunteers and ORLANDO CARES partner Chipotle Restaurants and celebrated the harvest of The Garden, a Cities of Services initiative.
The Garden is an after-school program for inner city and at-risk youth where students grow their own eatable container gardens, learn about the science of agriculture and related career options and become familiar with healthy food options while experiencing team building through gardening and nature exploration.
Dover Shores Summer Camp - Children Backpack Give-a-Way
On Friday, August 10, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz visited the Summer Camp at the Dover Shores Community Center and gave away over 150 backpacks with school supplies to the children at the center.

Oath of Office Ceremony
On Friday, June 1, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz took the Oath of Office at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center along with Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Jim Gray, Commissioner Patty Sheehan and Commissioner Samuel Ings.
Commissioner Ortiz' oath was administered by Honorable County Judge Wilfredo Martinez with the support of his youngest sister, Miss Neslyann Ortiz.
Orange County Healthy Star Community Baby Shower
On Saturday, May 19, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz welcomed closed to 100 Soon Mothers-To-Be at the Dover Shores Community Center.
The Orange County Healthy Star Program offered a day of workshops, demonstrations, games, food and music for almost 100 soon mothers-to-be, their husbands and children.
Johnson Manor Mother's Day Celebration
On Friday, May 11, 2012, the Seniors residents of the Johnson Manor Community celebrated their annual Mothers' Day Celebration.
Commissioner Tony Ortiz's Aide, Ana L. Cruz and his Liaison Officer Edward Rosado attended the event and assisted by serving the food to all the attendees.
They enjoyed an afternoon of music, food and camaraderie.
Hispanic Health Initiatives Annual Health Fair
On May 5, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz attended the Annual Hispanic Health Initiatives Health Fair at the Dover Shores Community Center. This is the second time that Mrs. Josephine Mercado, organizer of the health fair and Executive Director of Hispanic Health Initiatives, Inc., chose the Dover Shores Community Center for the event.
More than 300 people attended this year's health fair and took advantage of free tests, such as, glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and more. Additionally, 25 free mammograms were done for free that day.
Casa de Mexico Cinco de Mayo Celebration at City Hall
On May 4, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz welcomed to City Hall our friends and guests from Casa de Mexico during their annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

2012 Relay For Life at the Jackson Middle School
This year, the Azalea Park Relay for Life event raised over $11,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Commissioner Robert Stuart (City District 3) attended the event on behalf of Commissioner Ortiz.
This year, due to weather conditions, they moved the event to the cafeteria.
Congrats to Principal Ruiz, his staff and everyone else involved in the event for an awesome job done!

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Engelwood Park Neighborhood celebrated their First Community Dog Walk.

Rural/Metro Ambulance Donated an Ambulance to Haiti
In November 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz went to the Dominican Republic on a government-related visit to establish a working relationship with Senator Rosa Sonia Mateo, from the Province of Dajabon, which borders on Haiti.
While in Dajabon, Commissioner Ortiz met Consul of Haiti in Atlanta, Mr. Ghandi Thomas.
When Commissioner Ortiz returned and found out about the ambulances that Rural/Metro Ambulance was going to retired, he also thought about Haiti.
On Friday, April 20, 2012, Consul Ghandi Thomas traveled from Atlanta to Orlando to received an ambulance from Rural/Metro Ambulance.
Rural/Metro Ambulance Donates Two Ambulances to the Dominican Republic
In November 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz went to the Dominican Republic on a government-related visit to establish a working relationship with Senator Rosa Sonia Mateo. Commissioner Ortiz’ hope was to bring manufacturing companies from the Dominican Republic to Orlando. While meeting with Senator Mateo, Commissioner Ortiz learned that a hospital in Senator Mateo’s home, Province of Dajabon, which borders on Haiti, had a critical shortage of ambulances. Upon his return, he learned that Rural/Metro Ambulance was getting ready to retire some of their older, high-mileage ambulances.
Rural/Metro worked with Commissioner Ortiz’s office and with Senator Mateo’s Representative, Mr. Alejandro Gonzalez, to make arrangements to donate the ambulances. Immediately after turning over the keys on Friday, April 13, 2012, the ambulances were driven to a port in Brevard County at which time they will be taken by boat to Dajabon. Emergency Operations Center Visit from Mayors of Puerto Rico
On March 29, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz welcomed 12 Mayors and their staff members, from Puerto Rico, who came to Orlando to attend a National Hurricane Conference. This meeting took place at the City of Orlando Emergency Office.
Children from the Engelwood Neighborhood Center Participated at a Conservation Day Camp at Animal Kingdom
Sixty children from the Engelwood Neighborhood attended, for free, a Conservation Day Camp sponsored by Disney at the Animal Kingdom Park during their Spring Break (Monday, March 26, 2012 until Friday, March 30, 2012),
The children were picked up in the morning at the center and transported to the park every day. The camp was designed to inspire children to take action by exposing them to current animal, habitat, and conservation issues in a fun and interactive environment.
Commissioner Ortiz sent off the children during their first day at the camp.
Park of the Americas' Community Office Grand Opening
On Thursday, March 15, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz, District 2 Neighborhood Leaders Council members and Family, Parks & Recreation Staff opened the Park of the Americas' Community Room.
The Community Room will be available for District 2 Community Leaders to hold Homeowners and Neighborhood Watch meetings. Commissioner Ortiz will be working at least twice a month from this office starting in May 2012.
The Park of the Americas will be going through a general restoration and we are hoping to open its doors in 2013.
NBA All-Star Food Distribution
Commissioner Ortiz joined Mayor Dyer, Commissioner Daisy Lynum, the City of Orlando Families, Parks and Recreation, the National Basketball Players Association and the Feed The Children organization and provided food to families at the Emery Hamilton Sports Complex.
The National Basketball Players Association provided eight semi truck loads of food that were delivered to three City facilities including Engelwood Neighborhood Center, Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center and Emery Hamilton Sports Complex.

Chinese Lunar Parade

International Graffiti Artist, Hector "Nicer" Nazario Paints a Roberto Clemente Mural for the Orange County Regional History Center and Receives a Plaque From Commissioner Tony Ortiz
In the morning of Saturday, January 28, 2012 and in conjunction with the "Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente Exhibition" from the Smithsonian Institute and Smithsonian Latino Center, International Graffiti Artist, Hector "Nicer" Nazario painted a mural of Puerto Rican Baseball legend, Roberto Clemente in front of the Orange County Regional History Center.
Commissioner Ortiz took advantage of this opportunity to give a plaque to Mr. Nazario, who painted a mural of Roberto Clemente at the Azalea Park in District 2 late last year. He also gave a plaque to Azalea Park Coach and Board of Directors Vice President, Mr. Earl Lugo, for his hard work and commitment to the children of our community.

Each team member was placed in a different classrooms with students. They talked about their education, professional career and future plans. At the end, they answered questions from the students.

Engelwood Seniors First Group Thanksgiving Day Celebration and Art Workshop
On November 15, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz joined the Engelwood Seniors First Program for their annual Thanksgiving Holiday luncheon. The lunch was provided by Sedanos' Supermarket.
This year an Art Class by local artist, Ms. Sina Sutter was given to the seniors. The class was sponsored by Humana, Dr. Maria Garcia from LeHans Medical Center and Lynil Visiting Nurses.
The seniors enjoyed very much the class and the food.

Commissioner Tony Ortiz celebrated the first District 2 Community Fall Festival on Friday, October 22, 2011 at the Jackson Middle School Track Field.
More than 300 people attended this event. Children played all night, while parents listened to music played by local pianist and vocalist, Mr. Randal Branham and Latin Group "Son Bien Chevere."

September 15 through October 15 America celebrates the culture and traditions of our Hispanic citizens.
Semoran Business Partnership (SEBUPA) Clean Up Event
On Saturday, August 27, 2011 more than 200 volunteers participated during the Semoran Business Partnership (SEBUPA) Clean Up Event. Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners Tony Ortiz, Phi Diamond, Orange County Commissioner Lui Damiani, State Representative Darren Soto, OPD Officers, Sheriff Department Officers, Business Owners, Community Organizations, Students, etc. attended the event and helped SEBUPA to clean up the Semoran Boulevard, from Lake Underhill Road to Colonial SR 50.
Thanks to Keep Orlando Beautiful for providing the materials and to City and County Code Enforcement officers for driving around collecting the trash and providing water to the volunteers.
This is their second event this year. The first one was on February 2011.

Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Ortiz announced the First City's Market Street District: the Semoran Business Partnership! "Market Street" is a unique designation specifically designed for the City of Orlando for districts that do not necessary meet the historic preservation requirement for a Main Street designation.
The Semoran Business Partnership joins the City's five existing districts in the Orlando Main Street Program - Audubon Park Garden District, College Park Partnership, Downtown South, Ivanhoe Village and Mills 50.
2011 Mayor's Neighborhood and Community Summit
On Saturday, May 14, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz joined Mayor Dyer during his 2011 Mayor's Neighborhood and Community Summit.
More than 200 neighborhood, community and faith based organization leaders and volunteers participated in this year's Summit. The Summit offered 16 workshops divided into two sessions.

Demetree Park Clean Up By Students from the Colonial High School National Honor Society
Hats off to the Colonial High School National Honor Society Members who volunteered at the Demetree Park on Saturday, May 14, 2011.
Close to 20 students picked up trash, raked mulch, painted the boardwalk, cleaned the playground and more!

Single Marines Volunteer Event at Park of the Americas
Over the last two years, the annual Single Marine Program conference has ended with the participants reaching out to the community that hosts the conference through a volunteer opportunity.
On April 15, 2011 more than one hundred Marines volunteered at the District 2 Parks of the America.
Commissioner Ortiz, a former Marine himself, joined the group on that day.
He would like to also thank City of Orlando Green-Up Manager, Mrs. Jan Rahill, for doing an outstanding job organizing the event.

On Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Asociacion Borinquena, Commissioner Ortiz received the honor of being one of this year's recipient of the Paloma de la Paz Award. This award is given to artists, athletes, community and political leaders for their contributions to the community by Great Productions International, Inc.

District 2 Semoran Wall Groundbreaking Ceremony
On Friday, March 18, 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Semoran Wall that is part of his Vision Plan for the revitalization of the Semoran Corridor. The constructor, Gomez Construction, began the project on Monday, March 21, 2011. It is schedule to be finalize by July 2011.

Colonel Joe Kittinger Park Reopening Ceremony
On Wednesday, March 15, 2011 Mayor Buddy Dyer and Colonel Joe Kittinger joined Commissioner Tony Ortiz at the re-opening ceremony of the Colonel Joe Kittinger Park. This park is located at 305 South Crystal Lake Drive.
Colonel Joseph William Kittinger II was born on July 27, 1928 in Tampa, Florida. He is a former Command Pilot and career military officer in the United States Air Force. He is most famous for his participation in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior, holding the records for having the highest, fastest and longest skydive and as being the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon. Serving as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he was shot down and spent 11 months in a North Vietnamese prison.

District 2 Crime Free Multi-Housing Event at Danube Apartments
Through the City’s new Crime Free Multi-Housing Initiative, rental property owners and residents are partnering with the Orlando Police Department to eliminate crime in multi-housing rental properties.
