Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Participates in His 100th Work-along
Mayor Dyer will Work-Along with the Orlando Police Department to Install
Air Conditioning Units in Resident Homes

WHY:
When Mayor Dyer took office in 2003, one of his first actions was to better understand how each of the City departments and divisions operate. To do this, he launched his work-alongs where he worked alongside City employees assisting them with their daily functions in their respective jobs.

In 2009, Mayor Dyer transitioned his series of work-alongs to also focus on community service related events as part of his Strengthen Orlando initiative to encourage citizens to get involved and continually give back to their community.

Now after picking up garbage alongside solid waste employees to serving meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House to installing free smoke detectors in resident homes with the Orlando Fire Department, Mayor Dyer will participate in his 100th work-along, combining the two major themes of his “work-alongs” with City staff and giving back to our community.

WHAT:
This Friday, March 30th, for his 100th work-along, Mayor Dyer will work alongside Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orlando Police Department officers to install window air conditioning units in homes of elderly residents in Orlando's Parramore community.

Installing these air conditioning units before the heat of Florida's summer arrives will provide elderly residents added protection against heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.

Mayor Dyer will assist in unfastening and removal of any non-working window air conditioning unit, placing the new unit into the window, fastening the unit to brackets and sealing the unit using weather-stripping for the outside and caulking for the inside.

The units were donated by Moms Remembered, a local organization that helps elderly “moms” remain self-sufficient and in their own homes. To date, the organization has donated 75 window air conditioning units to needy, elderly mothers.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Delivered Annual State of the City Address

Orlando Mayor Dyer: “Our newfound culture of collaboration helped us weather the worst recession since the great depression and position Orlando as one of a handful of American cities primed to recover faster and stronger than anyone else.”

February 29, 2012 – ORLANDO, FL – Today, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer delivered his annual State of the City address to hundreds of residents, business owners and community leaders gathered at the UCF College of Medicine at Lake Nona. The annual State of the City address was taken “on the road” for the first time to highlight the unprecedented public-private partnership that made this emerging bio-tech and life science cluster a reality.

The Medical City, a one-of-a-kind cluster of clinics, classrooms, laboratories, housing and recreation space that will revolutionize America's healthcare landscape and the local economy and employ more than 30,000 with an $8 billion annual economic impact.

Mayor Dyer explained that the partnership strategy that fueled the Medical City also laid the foundation for securing SunRail, the Community Venues, and strengthening Orlando's neighborhoods. “As important as the Medical City is to our future, the way it was created might be even more important,” said Mayor Dyer. “In fostering the partnership necessary to create the Medical City, we didn't just build a one-time project. We also created a road map for how to get big, important things done… and how to overcome the challenges that confront our community.”

During his address, Mayor Dyer also highlighted his administration's commitment to good government which according to Mayor Dyer means “being as careful with a dollar as the families in our City.” Today, Mayor Dyer reported that Orlando's City government is in the best financial shape of any major city in Florida.

Vision Planning efforts for our neighborhoods and business corridors have resulted in several successes, including:

The completion of the new community wall along the west side of Semoran Boulevard between Andora Street and Casablanca Lane. The new concrete block wall greatly enhances the appearance of the Semoran Boulevard business district, reduces traffic noise and provides better security for Semoran neighborhood residents.

The construction of a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Washington Shores, an area that is underserved by supermarkets.

The creation of a major urban park at Lake Beauty in Downtown South and on the Orlando Health hospital campus.

The City has added 14 miles of sidewalks over the last four years and repaired another 7 miles of sidewalks.

Through $4 million in Federal funds, dedicated to surface transportation, the City continues to invest in sidewalks through the ORLANDO WALKS project. The funds are being provided in two phases with each phase estimated at $2 million for a total of approximately 18 miles of sidewalks. The first phase began construction in October 2011 with 6 miles already completed and the phase slated to finish in winter 2012. Phase 2 construction is estimated to start in the fall of 2013.

In 2011, Traffic Calming measures were implemented in 11 different neighborhoods. The most common types of traffic calming measures which are implemented by the City include: speed humps, speed tables, raised pedestrian crosswalks, driver feed-back signs like radar devices, roundabouts, and rumble strips.

In 2011, the City resurfaced 15 miles of neighborhood streets and repaired 13-hundred feet of curb and gutter space.

Ings Further Enhance Public Safety in Metrowest Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Heather Fagan 407.246.3423
                Cassandra Lafser 407.246.2182
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 6 City Commissioner Samuel B. Ings Further Enhance Public Safety in Metrowest Community
January 26, 2012 - ORLANDO, FL – The City of Orlando is set to begin renovations on an expanded and permanent community police office for Metrowest. The new location – a former bank at 6440 Raleigh Street – is owned by the City rather than the current location which is leased. The expanded community police office will continue to serve the growing MetroWest section of the City of Orlando, while increasing response times and police presence in those neighborhoods.

More than 130 patrol officers will report to the expanded Southwest Community Police Office, an increase of 80 officers. The new community police office will also include a community room, which will be available for neighborhood and local business meetings and gatherings.

On December 14, 2011, the City of Orlando closed on the purchase of the former bank property allowing the City to move forward with these plans to expand and relocate the MetroWest police substation. On January 22, 2012, the City released a request for proposals (RFP) for a design/build contract with plans to begin construction on the renovation of the 3,135 square foot building in the fall of 2012 once the design phase is completed. Construction is expected to be complete in the winter of 2012.

“I would like to thank Mayor Dyer for his continued commitment to public safety and for his continued focus on providing the Orlando Police Department with the tools and resources to continue to combat criminals and reduce crime in our City,” said District 6 City Commissioner Samuel B. Ings. “This expanded community police office will provide our officers with increased access and will further ensure the safety of our residents in District 6.”

The Southwest Community Police Office is part of Mayor Dyer's continuing commitment to public safety and his Public Safety Initiative launched in 2006. Since 2006, the Orlando Police Department has bolstered the number of officers on the streets, added new substations throughout the City and invested in tools, training and technology.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Appoints Multicultural Affairs Director

January 11, 2012 – ORLANDO, FL - Building on his commitment to serve Central Florida's increasingly diverse community, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announces the appointment of Luis M. Martinez as Multicultural Affairs Director for the City of Orlando.

“The Hispanic community is the fastest growing minority group in our City, which enormously influences the local economy through their purchasing power, the diversification of the workforce and the establishment of minority-owned businesses,” said Mayor Dyer. “Based on these factors, we felt it was important to establish a new position that gives a stronger voice and better serves our diverse community. I am confident that as the Multicultural Affairs Director, Luis will add to our team and continue providing first class services to all our City's residents.”

As the Multicultural Affairs Director, Martinez will develop strategies to enhance the engagement of the Hispanic community, businesses and residents with City government; coordinate international business projects to encourage investments, business relocation and expansion from Latin America to Orlando; and to oversee the Hispanic Office for Local Assistance (HOLA).

Since 2006, the HOLA office has provided valuable information and referral services to new residents and families to our community, connecting them with more than 140 government and community organizations to find jobs, housing, healthcare services, educational opportunities and many other resources. Each year, the HOLA office provides assistance, education and information to approximately 15,000 individuals and families through personal visits, fairs, seminars, training, and exhibits and the bilingual, information phone line. Day-to-day operations of the HOLA Office will continue to be overseen by Alicia Ramirez, Coordinator & Hispanic Affairs Advisor for the HOLA Office, who has served in this capacity since the program's inception in 2006.

"I am very proud to have Mr. Luis Martinez joining our team,” said District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz. “Luis is one of our rising stars and I am confident he will work with our government and community with a great sense of ethics and professionalism."

Proceeding to this appointment, Martinez served as Director of Marketing and Recruitment for Ana G. Mendez University System from 2007 to 2011 and last year was appointed as Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Chancellor's Office of this institution. During this period of time he managed and developed innovative recruitment activities, public relations strategies and strong community ties toward maximizing the university public image and increasing the diverse student population. He also was a board member of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, where he collaborated in the coordination of special events, marketing activities and business development initiatives.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Daisy Lynum and the Orlando Police Department Celebrate Christmas with Windsor Cove Residents and Families

WHAT:
Instead of gun shots ringing through the Windsor Cove community, residents will be ringing in the holiday season with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Orlando Police Department. Mayor Dyer will join with District 5 City Commissioner Daisy Lynum and local residents from the Windsor Cove Apartment community as they celebrate the holiday season at the Windsor Cove Christmas Party hosted by the Orlando Police Department this Thursday, December 15.
Orlando Mayor Dyer Announces Fire Department Management Appointments

December 6, 2011 – ORLANDO, FL – Yesterday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the retirement of Deputy Chief Earl Youman after 25 years of service at the City of Orlando. Mayor Dyer has appointed Frank Cornier, a 20-year Orlando Fire Department (OFD) fire veteran to succeed Youman as Deputy Chief.

“Deputy Chief Earl Youman has a long and outstanding history with our fire department,” said Mayor Dyer. “He has provided strong leadership for almost two years as Deputy Chief and will be greatly missed by everyone who has had the pleasure of working with him.”

Newly promoted Deputy Chief Cornier will now be responsible for the administrative bureau of OFD which includes planning and resource management, training and public relations. Chief Cornier is OFD's first Hispanic to service in the capacity of Deputy Chief.

During his 20-year tenure with OFD, Cornier has served on every special teams discipline, as well as two years as a training officer and Special Operations Lieutenant. Most recently, Cornier served as Assistant Chief in the Planning and Resource Division for three years and was instrumental in the construction of two LEED-certified fire stations and working with the Fire Chief's office to achieve an ISO rating of 1 – the top 1/10th of 1 percent of all fire departments in the nation.

Buy Local Orlando Smart Phone Application Available on iTunes

December 5, 2011 – ORLANDO, FL – At today's City Council meeting, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the Buy Local Orlando smart phone application is now available for download in the Apple iTunes Store.

Launched in 2009 as part of the City's Strengthen Orlando initiative, the goal of Buy Local Orlando is to connect Orlando's businesses with the buying power of residents. Many of the program's merchant members offer special discounts to consumers that present a free Buy Local Orlando consumer card during purchase.

Now, consumers can redeem any special offers at participating businesses using the free smart phone application which provides GPS-driven merchant information, including discounts, to mobile users.

The phone app launch comes just weeks after the launch of a new and improved website at buylocalorlando.com which allows consumers to search for participating businesses by category and neighborhood.

“We are excited that these program additions will further enhance local spending and make it easier for Orlando consumers to support our City's businesses when shopping for goods and services, especially this holiday season,” said Mayor Dyer.

The enhanced website and phone app allows businesses to reach consumers in a more robust, customized manner by controlling the timing and terms of any special offers or events without giving up revenue to a third party.

City of Orlando merchants can obtain membership in Buy Local Orlando by visiting the website. An annual membership fee of $99 applies.

The Android version of the app will launch in the coming weeks. Consumers without a smart phone will still be able to support the program and take advantage of any special offers or discounts by using the free Buy Local Orlando consumer cards, which can be printed from the website.
###

November 16th, 2011 - The Community Food and Outreach Center and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer are launching a campaign to help families hurt by the economic crisis that has hit Central Florida and other cities across the nation. The NBALockoutRelief.org Campaign is the Community Food and Outreach Center's most aggressive campaign to date to help provide food for hungry families in Central Florida, rally community volunteers and help the thousands of families who are in need due to the NBA Lockout.

Orlando Mayor Dyer is working with Mayors in other NBA cities to develop a nationwide effort to support these families and help them for as long as this lockout lasts. Last month, Mayors of NBA cities issued an open letter to the NBA and the NBA Players Union, asking them to consider the consequences to cities if a lockout continues.

The NBALockoutRelief.org Campaign is also calling on NBA owners and players to partner with the cities and personally adopt charities in their respective communities and support them during this labor dispute. The final part of the campaign calls on elected officials from all levels including State officials and President Obama to volunteer and offer support to assist these families and all the families in need during this time.

With the Community Food and Outreach Center located 2 miles from the new Amway Center, many of those who have lost their jobs or lost income due to the NBA Lockout in Central Florida will look to the charity for help. “We were already seeing almost 300 families in need, per day, at our campus in Orlando; with the local economy struggling and taking an even bigger hit now because of the lockout, that number will grow even larger in the next few weeks. These are good people who are not looking for a hand-out, but just need a hand-up to help them,” says Scott George, the Co-Founder of the Community Food and Outreach Center that provides hunger relief programs, crisis relief programs and educational programs for hundreds of families each day on its Downtown Orlando campus.

“Win or lose, our residents support the Orlando Magic, just like the residents of every NBA city do,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “We are encouraging the owners and players to return the favor by supporting families who are struggling as a direct result of the NBA Lockout.”

“These lockout families are not looking for entitlements to bail them out of this crisis, they are not asking for hand-out solutions; they are hard-working people that are victims of circumstances that are simply out of their control,” said Andrae Bailey, Executive Director of Community Food and Outreach Center. “The next few months are critical for these families affected by the NBA Lockout across America,” said Bailey. “This NBA Lockout needs to be an urgent wake-up call that we have to do more for the hungry children and hurting families in Orlando and across America during this critical time. We must join together now to give a helping hand to our neighbors in need,” said Bailey.
