Mayor Dyer Kicks-off Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

WHAT: Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Network will host the first City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration.

This event will celebrate the commencement of the Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2007. Across the country, Americans celebrate the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

The Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off will showcase City services, the introduction of the Hispanic Advisory Network, the unveiling of an art piece donated to commemorate the occasion, music/cultural entertainment, and a proclamation issued by Mayor Dyer.

Mayor Dyer recently established the Hispanic Advisory Network to assist the City of Orlando in their efforts to serve the needs of the city’s growing Hispanic population. The Network will act as a bridge between this vibrant and growing base of Hispanic residents and the City of Orlando elected officials and government departments.

WHEN: Friday, September 14, 2007
The event will be held from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
The program will start at 4:00 PM.

WHERE: City of Orlando
City Hall Rotunda
400 South Orange Ave.
