Mayor Dyer Announces “Orlando Stops”
Locations of First Red Light Cameras Unveiled

WHAT:

Mayor Buddy Dyer will announce “Orlando Stops,” the City’s red light enforcement system designed to reduce accidents caused by red light running, and unveil the locations of the first ten approaches that will utilize red light cameras.

In December of 2007, the Orlando City Council passed the Ordinance amending Chapter 5 of the City Code to include Article III, ”Red Light Infractions.” Since the City of Orlando adopted a civil enforcement process for red light signal violations, no points will be assessed against the vehicle owner’s record. A civil fine in the amount of $125.00 will be assessed for the first two violations and a civil fine in the amount of $250.00 will be assessed for the third and any subsequent violation by the owner in any three year period.

Red light violations are among the most common causes of motor vehicle collisions and often result in fatalities and injuries. In Florida, red light running accounts for at least 100 fatalities and more than 6,300 injuries every year. In 2007, there were more than 525 red light running crashes in the City of Orlando.

LaserCraft, Inc. is the provider of the City’s of Orlando’s automated red light enforcement equipment and services. The Company was selected by the City following a competitive bid process in March 2008. The Company is available to demonstrate the red light enforcement system following the press conference.

WHY:

Traffic crashes resulting from red light running tend to be the most deadly. The use of red light cameras have proven to be an effective means of reducing the number of red light running crashes at intersections within Florida and the United States, ultimately saving lives. Two to four officers are required to conduct an effective and safe red light running detail at a single intersection. Use of red light running enforcement cameras in Orlando will free our law enforcement officers to address other public safety issues, making for a more efficient use of manpower.
