Mayor Dyer Announces Launch of Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children “In the Zone” Program Preparing Medical Residents to be Advocates for Children

WHAT:

Mayor Buddy Dyer joins physician leaders and executives from Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, renowned pediatrician Thomas Tonniges, MD, director of the Institute for Child Health Improvement with Boystown National Research Hospital, and representatives from several community organizations to launch In the Zone in partnership with the City of Orlando’s Parramore Kidz Zone. The new medical education program is designed to teach residents to recognize and understand the numerous community factors that can impact a child’s physical health. In the Zone will provide innovative training experiences that help prepare residents to be advocates for children.

"41% of Parramore households have at least one child with chronic health needs,” said Mayor Dyer. "Leveraging community partnerships with Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children's In The Zone project will help us achieve one of the fundamental goals of Parramore Kidz Zone by identifying those children with acute and chronic healthcare needs and ensuring they receive appropriate treatment."

Several community organizations in the Parramore area will serve as In the Zone partners including the Center for Multicultural Wellness and Prevention, the Orlando Day Nursery, the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County, the downtown Shepherd’s Hope Clinic and the Howard Phillips Center’s Teen Xpress Peer Education Program. (A complete list is attached.) Arnold Palmer Hospital’s 42 residents will select a partner agency for a two week rotation, during which they will function as liaison, resource person and consultant in matters of child, adolescent and family health.

The City of Orlando believes that a tangible and sustained effort must be made to provide relief for families and meet the diverse needs and challenges our residents may be facing because of the economic crisis. To accomplish this task, the City will work with partner organizations to provide residents with aid and short term relief in the areas such as health and wellness as part of the Strengthen Orlando plan. Strengthen Orlando is a comprehensive plan designed to identify activities to help create jobs, provide economic stimulus, connect residents with vital resources and information and ensure that Orlando remains on track for a prosperous future.
