City of Orlando Makes Parking More Accessible for Two-Wheeled Vehicles

WHAT: Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan will join staff from the City’s Parking Division and Sign Shop as they designate spaces for two-wheeled motorized vehicles. Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Sheehan will assist with painting the curb, striping the parking spaces and installing two-wheel parking signage.

Under Green Works Orlando, Mayor Dyer’s environmental action agenda, the City pledged to improve opportunities for alternative modes of transportation for our citizens. By designating free two-wheeled parking zones throughout the Downtown Business District, the City is improving access for individuals that use motorcycles or motorized scooters as their main form of transportation. These vehicles are more sustainable as they contribute less to traffic congestion and receive better gas mileage than regular four-wheel vehicles.

Phase I of this plan will provide eight areas of on-street parking spaces for two-wheeled motorized vehicles. Phase II will include locations within City operated parking garages. The spaces would be on the first level and have easy access from the street without passing through a gate arm. Bicycle racks will also be included in these designated parking areas.

The Parking Division plans to continue creating additional two-wheel parking zones throughout the Downtown Business District as demand increases and funds allow.

PROJECT
HISTORY:
A comprehensive review was completed to determine possible locations for safely accommodating two-wheel vehicle parking on-street and within the City’s parking facilities. The review included the Downtown Business District and adjacent high pedestrian traffic areas. To begin this pilot project, a total of twenty Downtown locations were reviewed for designation as two-wheel vehicle parking zones. Four areas are currently designated, eight areas are included in Phase I, and the remainder will be created as demand warrants and availability of funds allow.
