MAYOR BUDDY DYER AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
PROVIDE THE LESS FORTUNATE WITH IDIGNITY

WHAT: Mayor Buddy Dyer will work side-by-side with members of his senior staff and community volunteers as they provide Florida ID cards, drivers licenses, birth certificates, Social Security cards and other documents to the area’s impoverished and homeless citizens. As part of his Strengthen Orlando plan, Mayor Dyer has transitioned his series of work-alongs to focus primarily on community service in an effort to encourage citizens to get involved and give back to their community.

IDignity is an integral part of the Mayor’s Strengthen Orlando plan as it is removing barriers for citizens seeking to get back on their feet. One of the most significant impediments for employment is lack of identification. It can be frustrating and intimidating for a person to apply for forms of ID that are necessary for them to have access to housing, apply for a job or seek essential services. IDignity is simplifying the process by grouping all of these vital services under one roof.

Since its inception in May, 2008, IDignity has provided assistance to more than 1,800 un-duplicated individuals and continues to aid approximately 250 people each month. The IDignity event is held once a month on a Thursday at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. For more information, visit idignity.org.

WHERE: The Orlando Union Rescue Mission
410 W. Central Blvd.

WHEN: Thursday, April 23, 2009
9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

IDignity: IDignity was formed by a coalition of Downtown churches: The Cathedral Church of St. Luke, First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, First United Methodist Church of Orlando, St. James Catholic Cathedral and Trinity Lutheran Church. The IDignity team works with representatives from the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, Homeless Services Network, Legal Advocacy at Work, Florida Division of Driver Licenses, Orange County Health Department, Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs in order to make this initiative a great success.

IDignity’s biggest needs are awareness and monetary donations. Donations can be made via paypal on their website, idignity.org. Volunteers can also be utilized but will require training.
