Mayor Dyer Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

WHAT:

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and the City of Orlando will host the third annual City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff on Friday, September 18, to celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture in Orlando.

The event will include a sampling of Hispanic food tastings and light cultural entertainment. Hispanic painter Sina Sutter will also unveil a unique watercolor piece at the event.

Hispanic Heritage Month, runs from September 15 to October 15, 2009, and honors the traditions of U.S. residents who trace their origins to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The starting date of Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declaring their independence in 1821 as well as the independence days of Mexico and Chile.

The City provides Hispanic outreach through the Hispanic Office of Local Assistance (HOLA). Located at 595 N. Primrose Dr., the HOLA Office provides Hispanic residents with information about our community and services, as well as access to computers..
