Parramore Kidz Zone’s (PKZ) Blacktop
Basketball League is commemorating the end of its second season
on the newly refurbished “green” basketball courts at the John
H. Jackson Community Center. This championship game will be the
first on the newly refurbished environmentally-friendly
basketball courts donated by NBA Cares, Orlando Magic and Toyota
Project Rebound in July 2009.
The PKZ Blacktop Basketball League, comprised
of six teams with two from the Parramore community, was created
last year as part of Parramore Kidz Zone’s mission to engage
at-risk youth in positive activities outside of school hours.
Through the league and other initiatives, PKZ works to help the
Parramore youth with setting goals for school, work and
relationships, connecting them to tutoring and job training, and
encouraging them to reach their full potential. The Blacktop
Basketball League is one of many services offered by PKZ, which
provides creative outreach to engage a critical mass of
Parramore’s children and linking them to positive opportunities,
including pre-kindergarten education, parenting education,
health care, mentoring, tutoring, and constructive activities
when school is out. Modeled after the
Harlem Children’s Zone, Parramore Kidz Zone launched by Mayor
Dyer in 2006, employs creative outreach to engage a critical
mass of Parramore’s children and linking them to positive
opportunities, including pre-kindergarten education, parenting
education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and constructive
activities when school is out.
