Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Reopens Colonel Joe Kittinger Park

WHAT: Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and members from the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) and the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) will unveil the City of Orlando’s newly renovated Colonel Joe Kittinger Park on March 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Colonel Kittinger will be honored in a ceremony prior to the official reopening for his accomplishments as an aviation pioneer and hero. He has been recognized with numerous world records including one for his epic solo balloon flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

The City has partnered with GOAA for the park’s development and future maintenance, and OOCEA provided oversight of design and construction.

Colonel Joe Kittinger Park had long been a place for people to enjoy, but the nearby Florida State Road 408 Expressway expansion and construction necessitated some much needed improvements. Now the newly renovated Colonel Joe Kittinger Park includes a refurbished playground, pavilion and pond. In addition, the park features a loudspeaker system that allows visitors to monitor the Air Traffic Control Tower conversations. A future addition to the park will include a static display of an F-4 Phantom jet, the same type that was piloted by Colonel Kittinger during the Vietnam War.
