HUNDREDS OF U.S. MAYORS TO CONVENE IN ORLANDO: THE
ECONOMY, JOB CREATION, DEFENSE TRANSITION, INFRASTRUCTURE, 2012
PRESIDENTIAL & CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGNS TOP AGENDA
Wed., June 13 – Sat., June 16: The United States
Conference of Mayors 80th Annual Meeting
Washington, D.C. – The nation’s mayors, led by Conference
President Los Angeles (CA) Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, will gather in
the presidential campaign swing state of Florida from Wednesday, June 13
to Saturday, June 16, for the 80th Annual Meeting of The United States
Conference of Mayors (USCM), to be hosted by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
United States Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to
address the bipartisan group Friday morning, June 15th. Other noted
speakers include: HUD Secretary Donovan, Educ. Secretary Duncan,
Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA), and Former Treasury Secretary Henry
On Saturday, June 16, Philadelphia, PA Mayor Michael Nutter will be
inaugurated as the new President of The Conference for the June 2012 –
June 2013 term.
During the meeting, mayors will discuss both the upcoming
Presidential and Congressional elections and give political insight as
to the potential impact of each in the nation’s metro regions.
Issues topping the mayors’ public policy agenda include: job creation,
workforce training, long-term unemployment, transportation and
infrastructure, exports/imports, crime and violence reduction, mayors
and social media, expanding access to healthy food in urban areas,
employment help for veterans, the drawdown of military troops abroad and
the impact of defense cuts on U.S. cities. On the final day of the
meeting, mayors will debate and vote on resolutions that will shape the
organization’s priorities for the year.
Mayors will also win awards and recognition for innovative practices to
make cities more livable and sustainable, as well as for record levels
of aluminum can recycling.
