Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer To Become an Honorary
Stormtroopers from 501st Legion to March on
Orlando City Hall
WHO: Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will become an honorary Stormtrooper and
member of the 501st Legion in a presentation at City Hall Plaza.
Orlando Science Center President and CEO JoAnn Newman along with members
of the Makaze Squad of the 501st Legion, Florida Garrison will induct
Orlando Mayor Dyer into their ranks with a brief ceremony.
This presentation is part of the celebration leading up to the premiere
of Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination – the new blockbuster
exhibit at Orlando Science Center.
WHAT: Mayor Dyer will also proclaim Saturday, Oct. 13 as “Star Wars®:
Where Science Meets Imagination Day” in the City of Orlando, the same
day as the exhibit’s grand opening at Orlando Science Center.
At the event at City Hall, there will be chances for the public to win
Star Wars® prizes, and there will be interaction and photo opportunities

501st LEGION: The 501st Legion is an international fan-based
organization dedicated to the construction and wearing of
screen-accurate replica costumes of villains and other nefarious
characters from the Star Wars® universe. The group boasts more than
5,500 active members in 47 countries as of January 1, 2012. The Florida
Garrison contains the most members in the country.
The Legion helped raise more than $11.8 million U.S. in the year 2011
through appearances and fundraising activities such as charity auctions.
STAR WARS®: WHERE SCIENCE MEETS IMAGINATION:
Developed by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with
Lucasfilm Ltd. and presented by Bose Corporation©, the 10,000
square-foot exhibit explores the fantasy technologies depicted in the
Star Wars® films, as well as the real science behind them, and the
current research that may someday lead to real-life versions of the
technologies seen in the film series.
Star Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination is the first exhibition to
display costumes and props from all six Star Wars® films with real-world
technologies. The exhibit includes extensive video interviews with
filmmakers, scientists and engineers, and hands-on components, including
two large Engineering Design Labs, where visitors can build and test
their own speeders and robots.
WHY: This event announces the impending premiere of Star Wars®: Where
Science Meets Imagination at Orlando Science Center. The exhibit opens
to the public for a limited engagement on Saturday, Oct. 13.
