DDB Executive Director Thomas Chatmon New Chair of International Downtown Association

ORLANDO, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2012) – The Downtown Development Board announced today that Thomas Chatmon, executive director of the Orlando Downtown Development Board (DDB), was elected chair of the International Downtown Association (IDA) board of directors.

Chatmon will serve as chair through September 2013. In his new role with the IDA, Chatmon will lead the IDA in the implementation of the new, three-year strategic plan for the organization. His vision for the IDA is clear and begins with “Strengthening the Core, Mastering the Basics, Moving Us Forward,” the board’s theme for 2013.

“Thomas has played a critical role in the redevelopment of Downtown Orlando,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “Under his leadership, Orlando is setting a new standard for downtown vitality. It’s only fitting that he was selected to help lead an international association focused on supporting downtown districts and organizations around the world.”

The IDA, with more than 600 members worldwide, informs and influences downtown leaders through annual conferences, monthly communications, advisory panels and general support.

“The IDA strives to help downtown communities become more livable urban centers, and Thomas exemplifies this effort,” said David T. Downey, president and CEO of IDA. “He has been involved with the IDA for nearly a decade and truly possesses the commitment and ability not only to make Downtown Orlando a great place to live, work and play, but also to help other communities do the same.”

Chatmon, who joined the DDB in 2007 after leading economic development efforts in Albany, Ga., has been a member of IDA since 2002.

“The IDA is a vital resource and advocate for downtowns around the world,” said Chatmon. “It’s a great honor for me and Downtown Orlando to be a part of the leadership team that helps guide other communities toward success.”

Chatmon was instrumental at giving members of the IDA an up-close look at Downtown Orlando, when the organization held its four-day spring conference at the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Downtown Orlando last spring.
