WORLD CUP CELEBRATION OFFERS CHANCE TO TAKE HOME A PIECE OF ORLANDO’S HISTORY

Mayor To Accept $85,000 Gift To City

Orlando, Fla. (June 8, 2004) – Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners and the Legacy Soccer Foundation will offer a chance to take home a piece of the City Hall soccer ball topper during the World Cup 10th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, June 11, 2004, at City Hall Plaza. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with the unveiling and donation of an $85,000 life-sized bronze soccer sculpture to commemorate the 1994 World Cup Games and recognize Orlando’s success as a world-class sports venue.

The public is invited to join local youth soccer associations, volunteers and community leaders for this free, history-making celebration of an event that put Orlando on the map for international world-class sports. The first 200 attendees will have the opportunity to leave with a commemorative piece of World Cup history that includes an actual piece of the soccer ball that covered City Hall to promote the games in 1994.

Orlando was highlighted for participating in the largest, most successful World Cup in soccer history after successfully winning the bid to host five soccer matches and attracting the attention of millions of viewers across the globe.

The World Cup ’94 memorabilia exhibit can be seen at the Orange County Regional History Center. For more event information, log onto cityoforlando.net or the official World Cup 10th Anniversary Web page at http://www.g-e-c.com/worldcup.html.
