COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY AT
GREENWOOD CEMETERY

ORLANDO, FL (August 20, 2004) – The City of Orlando’s Greenwood Cemetery will host a community clean-up day on Saturday, August 28, 2004, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Greenwood, a 100-acre cemetery located in downtown Orlando and one of Florida’s largest and most historical cemeteries, suffered a devastating loss of trees as a result of Hurricane Charley. More than 380 trees, many of which were more than 250 years old, were affected by the storm.

“When you and I look around, we might see acres and acres of marble and granite stones, but to the families, these are the only connection they have left to their departed loved ones,” said Greenwood Cemetery Sexton Don Price.

Since the cemetery’s resources are limited, the city encourages residents to bring everything needed to beautify the area. Needed items include rakes, gloves, water, lunch and anything else that will make this day a success.

Greenwood Cemetery was founded in 1880 and has been owned and operated by the City of Orlando since 1891. It is the final resting place of Orlando’s founding families. Some of the historical families include Joseph Bumby, Mayor Mahlon Gore, Cassius Boone (Great-Grandson of Daniel Boone), Mayor Capt. James Parramore, Mayor Bob Carr, Mayor Beardall, T. G. Lee, David Lockhart, Samuel Robinson, Mayor Braxton Beacham, Elijah Hand, Carey Hand, Joe Tinker.

The cemetery is located at 1603 Greenwood Street in Orlando.
