CITY OF ORLANDO TO CELEBRATE
DUBSDREAD’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY
ORLANDO, FL (November 15, 2004) – The City of
Orlando will celebrate Dubsdread Golf Course’s 80th anniversary from Friday,
November 19, through Wednesday, November 24, 2004. In recognition of the 80th
anniversary, Dubsdread will offer players a $19.24 greens fee all week.
Dubsdread, which was designed to be “dreaded” by unskilled players or “dubs,”
opened in 1924. For nearly a decade beginning in 1945, Dubsdread played host to
PGA and LPGA legends, such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Patty Berg and Babe
Didrikson Zaharias, who came to play in the Orlando Open International Mixed
Two-Ball. The course was built by Carl Dann and was managed by the Dann family
for more than 50 years. The City of Orlando purchased Dubsdread from the Dann
family in 1978.
The Club House and Tap Room Restaurant were remodeled in 1992, and the Pro Shop
has just completed a renovation. Additional renovations, including the
reconstruction of all 18 putting greens, are tentatively scheduled for the
summer of 2006.
Other activities during the anniversary week include:
November 20 80th birthday bash golf outing, giveaways, prizes and surprises
November 21 College Park historical homes and golf course tour
November 24 Cranberry Classic Golf Tournament, 4 person scramble with contest
and prizes. Shot Gun High Noon.
