ORLANDO’S BALDWIN PARK WINS ULI’S
2004 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
ORLANDO, FL (December 17, 2004) – Orlando’s
Baldwin Park community recently received a 2004 Award of Excellence from the
Urban Land Institute (ULI), the development community's preeminent research and
professional organization.
Baldwin Park was one of ten outstanding developments selected as winners at
ULI’s Fall Meeting in New York City in November. The Awards for Excellence
recognize the full development process of a project, not just its architecture
or design. Criteria for the awards include leadership, contribution to the
community, innovations, public/private partnership, environmental protection and
enhancement, response to societal needs and financial success.
Baldwin Park is located on the site of the former Orlando Naval Training Center;
the dismantling of the NTC was one of the largest demolition projects in the
nation’s history. Demolition began in 2000 and, at completion in 2006, Baldwin
Park will contain approximately 3,600 homes, 950,000 square feet of retail and
office space and house 8,000 residents. Baldwin Park features more than 400
acres of parks, lakes and open space and represents a model for future military
base reuse projects.
Throughout ULI’s Award of Excellence program’s history, all types of projects
have been recognized for their excellence, including office, residential,
recreational, urban/mixed-use, industrial/office park, commercial/retail, new
community, rehabilitation and public projects. The 2004 award winners, chosen
from 19 finalists, were selected by a jury of renowned land use development and
design experts.
Projects were evaluated on the basis of financial viability, the resourceful use
of land, design, relevance to contemporary issues, and sensitivity to the
community and environment. Each contributes to a live-work-play environment and
is designed to complement and enhance the greater community. For more
