CONSERVATION
PROGRAMS
In recent months,
City departments were asked to evaluate their business operations in
the context of efficiencies and preserving the environment.
Every department responded with solutions. Here are just a few conservation efforts we are implementing
citywide.
- We
use solar powered school speed limit signs at City schools.
- Orlando
Utilities Commission uses a small fleet of electric cars, which
employees drive between OUC facilities.
- To
preserve Florida’s delicate water balance, we use reclaimed
water to irrigate everything from citrus groves to golf courses
to foliage nurseries.
- Our
Street Tree Trust Fund and Trees to Good Homes programs increase
our urban forest and improve air quality and wildlife habitat.
- A
future cornerstone park at Baldwin Park will be developed using
recycled material from the old Naval Training Center.
- As
part of our decentralization of police operations, the new
Northwest Community Policing Office puts police in neighborhoods
to reduce response times, thereby emitting less pollution.
- Leu
Gardens has developed the “Right Plants in the
Right Places” program to determine which plants are
appropriate for the Florida environment.
This program also helps reduce the need for pesticides on
City properties by approximately 75 percent.
