Mayor Dyer and LYNX Dedicate “A Ride to
Remember” Bus
WHAT: Mayor Buddy Dyer and LYNX are helping
celebrate Memorial Day with “A Ride to Remember.” LYNX is the only transit
company in the nation with a bus dedicated to the memory of members of the armed
forces who gave their lives for our country.
“A Ride To Remember,” a special bus designed by LYNX in conjunction with the
White House Commission on Remembrance, will be unveiled Wednesday, May 17, at 10
a.m. at Bluejacket Park in the Baldwin Park section of Orlando.
The ceremony at Bluejacket Park will kick off the White House Commission’s
campaign for the National Moment of Remembrance. The campaign is an effort to
encourage Americans to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day by observing a
minute of silence at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to honor servicemen and
servicewomen who sacrificed their lives to protect our nation and its freedoms.
The bus will include the names of 18 armed forces personnel killed in the
current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and will represent all five branches
of the military.
The bus will go into service immediately on LYNX regular routes in Orange,
Osceola and Seminole counties as a daily reminder to honor fallen veterans. It
could become part of the National Memorial Day Parade attended by President
Bush, Vice President Cheney and military chiefs of staff on Memorial Day in
Washington D.C.
WHO: Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and LYNX Chairman of the Board Atlee Mercer will
welcome Sandy Bushue, Deputy Administrator for the Federal Transit
Administration and guests to the ceremony. The FTA contacted LYNX to come up
with the idea for “A Ride To Remember’’ because of past projects LYNX has done
to honor veterans.
Kenneth Conde Sr. will speak on behalf of the families of the deceased
servicemen and servicewomen. He is the father of Sgt. Kenneth Conde Jr. of
Orlando, who was awarded the Bronze Star after he was killed in Iraq.
WHEN: Wednesday, May 17, at 10 a.m.
WHERE: Bluejacket Park
2501 General Rees Avenue
