Spin Your Wheels Through Orlando with
Mayor Dyer
May 19 is Bike to Work Day
WHAT: Mayor Dyer and Orlando residents are
heading to work motor-free. This week, the City of Orlando will celebrate our
almost 230 miles of bikeways and bike lanes by participating in National Bike
Month with the Mayor’s proclamation of May 19 as “Bike to Work Day.”
Mayor Buddy Dyer encourages all citizens and visitors to celebrate “Bike to Work
Day” by riding a bike to work this Friday, and exploring a healthier and less
expensive way to commute. Bike to Work Day marks the 50th year that May has been
declared National Bike Month in America, and creates awareness about the
alternatives to driving to work.
The City of Orlando’s Transportation Department works hard to encourage the
community to consider riding bikes for transportation, recreation and exercise
and the City is proud of the bicycling opportunities available to the citizens
of Orlando. In 1990, Orlando was home to only three miles of bikeways, but now
through the work of the Transportation and Families, Parks, and Recreation
Departments, the City of Orlando has almost 230 miles of bicycle lanes, trails
and signed routes. Most recently, the City of Orlando opened the Dinky Line
Boardwalk over Lake Formosa. This is part of the future Orlando Urban Trail that
will connect Loch Haven Park to Downtown and Parramore.
WHERE: Mayor Dyer and Orlando citizens will leave from the Starbucks on 1915
Edgewater Drive in College Park with a final destination at City Hall.
WHEN: Friday, May 19 starts at 8:30 a.m. at Starbucks with arrival at City Hall
approximately 9 a.m.
