MAYOR DYER TO HOST Bike to Work Day
ORLANDO, FL (May 8, 2003) – The public is invited to join Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2003, for Bike to Work Day. Mayor Dyer will be joined by District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan and local cycling enthusiasts for a ride from the Panera Bread at the corner of East Robinson Street and North Eola Drive to City Hall.
Bike to Work Day promotes a positive, environmentally sound alternative to driving to work. This is the 47th year that May has been declared National Bike Month in the U.S.
In 2000, the City of Orlando was named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded the City of Orlando the Clean Air Excellence Award for the Orlando Bikeways Project. As a result of the City of Orlando’s Transportation Planning comprehensive plan, the City has increased its bikeways from three miles to more than 170 in the last twelve years. The City of Orlando Bicycle Plan Update identifies nearly 100 additional miles of facilities to be completed by 2010.
The event is open to the public; Panera Bread will provide light refreshments. For more information please call 407-246-2775 or visit www.cityoforlando.net.
