Local Artists Create Works of Art
in the Audubon Park Neighborhood

ORLANDO, FL (November 29, 2003) – The Audubon Park Neighborhood Watch Organization will unveil three very unique neighborhood identification signs on Saturday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m., beginning at the corner of Maguire Blvd. and Bennet Rd. These neighborhood identification signs, partially funded by a Mayor’s Neighborhood Matching Grant (MNMG), are one of a kind pieces of art -- a first in a City neighborhood.

What makes the signs unique is that each sign was designed and painted by a local artist. The artists, Elisabeth Ferber, Patricia Leonard Geary and Armand “Al” Fortin, donated their time and talent to paint a Florida landscape with birds for each neighborhood identification sign. All three artists will be on site on Saturday to watch as their artistic creations are unveiled in the Audubon Park neighborhood. Neighborhood volunteers will install the other two signs at the corner of Bennet Rd. and Corrine Drive and at the corner of Plaza Terrace and Executive Plaza Drive.

At a recent Audubon Park Neighborhood Watch Organization meeting Orlando District Three Commissioner Vicki Vargo called the signs, “a beautiful new addition to one of our great neighborhoods, “as she applauded the outstanding volunteer effort.

“Without the enthusiasm of the neighborhood and the project team’s effort the project would not have happened,” said Larry Alemi, the MNMG project leader. “This is our way of identifying and enhancing the place we call home”.

This neighborhood identification sign project was funded through the City of Orlando’s Mayor’s Neighborhood Matching Grants program. The grant program, in its 9th year, is designed to foster neighborhood empowerment and enhancement by providing grants to address neighborhood needs. Neighborhood organizations match the City’s grant with volunteer labor and private contributions. The Audubon Park Neighborhood Organization recruited over 35 businesses and individuals to contribute to the success of the neighborhood identification sign project.
