MAYOR DYER GOES WIRELESS
IN DOWNTOWN
ORLANDO, Fla. (January 14, 2004) –Mayor Dyer today joined downtown
web surfers at Lake Eola Park to launch the “Orlando Downtown
Wireless District Pilot Project”, turning downtown into a test zone for
receiving wireless internet access. The launch included a wireless
meeting between Mayor Dyer and local middle school students (view
chat).
The pilot program, which will run from mid January through
mid-summer, means residents and visitors will have free downtown
wireless internet access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The district
includes the street level of the Orange Avenue corridor from
Robinson Street to South Street; Wall Street Plaza including
Heritage Square Park; and Lake Eola Park bordered by North Eola
Drive, Robinson Street, Rosalind Avenue and Central Boulevard (see
map).
The Dyer Administration has undertaken the project so the city can
learn more about the type of internet services that can best serve
Orlando’s residents, visitors and downtown businesses. During the
pilot program, residents and visitors will be able to utilize their
laptop or PDA while enjoying visits to Lake Eola Park, or while
sipping a cup of coffee at a downtown outdoor café. Pure Connection
is the service provider and technical support provider for the Pilot
Project. For more information, visit the
Orlando
Downtown Wireless District Pilot Project information pages.
