MAYOR DYER AND COMMISSIONER PAGE TO
BREAK GROUND ON SMITH CENTER POOL

ORLANDO, Fla. (February 20, 2004) – Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 6 Commissioner Ernest Page Saturday at 11:30 a.m. will break ground on the Dr. James R. Smith Center Pool Complex at 1723 Bruton Blvd.

The Mayor announced the long-anticipated pool project during his State of the City Address in January. The pool complex will be used for both instructional and recreational use – “two pools in one.” Recreational amenities will include a loop slide, large water umbrella and mini water fountains; the instructional portion will feature a junior Olympic-sized six-lane, 25-yard competitive pool. The City’s Families, Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments will work to complete the pool complex by late summer 2004.

The Smith Center’s current amenities include an amphitheater, computer lab, game room, pottery studio, softball fields, basketball courts and a weight/fitness room.

From John Young Parkway, head west on Columbia Avenue to Bruton Boulevard. Head south on Bruton Boulevard and the Smith Center will be on the left.
