Fair Housing in Orlando

The Fair Housing Act (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act) and Chapter 57 of the Code of the City of Orlando prohibit discrimination in housing because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation (Chapter 57 only), familial status or disability. Also prohibited is retaliation (coercion and intimidation) against a person who is engaging in rights protected by the aforementioned laws.

HUD, which has authority and responsibility for the enforcement of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act (The Fair Housing Act), has determined that Chapter 57 of the Code of the City of Orlando is substantially equivalent to Title VIII with reference to fair housing discrimination. Therefore, the OHR has the authority, via contract with HUD, to accept complaints alleging a violation of fair housing laws, but retains for investigation only those in which the subject property is located within the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Orlando. Complaints filed with the OHR that are non-jurisdictional are forwarded to HUD for processing. Likewise, any complaint filed with HUD in which the subject property is located within the City limits of Orlando is forwarded to the OHR for processing.
