Explorer Post 657
The Orlando Fire Department, in cooperation
with the Boy Scouts of America, established the Orlando Fire Department
Explorer Post for all young people to find out if they are really
interested in firefighting as a career.
The Orlando Fire
Department has been sponsoring this program since 1976. This
program allows young adults, 14-21 years old, the opportunity to gain
first hand knowledge in the career of a firefighter. Explorers
attend bi-weekly meetings and bi-monthly training sessions, from medical
skills to firefighting techniques. The most exciting portion of
the program is the opportunity for the Explorers to ride on the fire
apparatus and to observe what takes place on 9-1-1 calls. This job
shadowing "ride time" is the key element to the success of the program.
It allows the participants to experience exactly what is needed, both
mentally and physically, when they choose a firefighting career.
