Children's Safety
Village
The Children’s Safety Village is located at
910 Fairvilla Road, next to the Central Florida Fairgrounds. It is a
miniature city designed to provide children with a realistic approach in
recognizing safety hazards similar to those found in everyday life. The
Children’s Safety Village is open to Day Care Centers, Private Schools,
Public Schools, Head Start Programs and anyone interested in learned
safety. The Firehouse is a model of our Smoke Trailer, allowing children
the realism of being in a smoke-filled room and needing two ways out.
The Firehouse has been fully operational since June 2000. Personnel from
the Orlando Fire Department have fire safety classes in progress at the
Village on a daily basis
The Children's Safety Village of Central
Florida is a unique educational facility where children encounter safety
hazards similar to those found in everyday life. Uniformed fire and law
enforcement safety experts teach children how to practice safety through
hands-on exercises, role-playing activities, and other exciting
participatory techniques.
The Orlando Fire Department in cooperation with the Orange County Fire
Rescue Division, provides full time instructors to the Fire Safety House
located at the Children's Safety Village. Fire safety education and
injury prevention programs are presented to audiences of all ages. They
are designed to educate, reinforce safety behavior and to reduce the
number of injuries and deaths related to fire.
This program exists in many different forms in our community. For
example, "Risk Watch" is a National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA)
program for Kindergarteners to Eight-Graders. It is a modular program
that covers many areas of safety, including fire safety. In 1999, twelve
elementary schools from Pre-K through fifth grade used this program as a
pilot. After completing a modular nine-week program, the students must
pass a final exam. After completion of the program, students are taken
to the Children's Safety Village where the information learned in the
classroom setting is now reinforced by role playing and demonstrations.
OFD partners with Safe Kids of Greater Orlando and Arnold Palmer
Hospital to sponsor this program.
If your organization is interested in a trip to the Children's Safety
Village, please contact the Division of Public Relations.
