Independence Day is quickly approaching and while fireworks are a holiday staple, they can also be very dangerous. Stay safe this 4th of July and follow these firework safety tips from the Orlando Fire Department:
Go to a public show, such as City of Orlando Fireworks at the Fountain.
- Never give fireworks to children and keep a close eye on them while watching fireworks.
- OFD does not encourage use of consumer fireworks, however, if you do use them:
- Determine a clear area free of combustibles
- Read all directions carefully
- Only light one firework at a time
- Do not drink while lighting fireworks
- Wear safety goggles
- Never relight a dud firework – place in bucket of water
- Always have a bucket of water and charged hose nearby
- Never carry fireworks on your person, including in your pocket or inside luggage
- Don’t forget your pets!
- Do not bring them around fireworks
- Pets may become frightened by the noise
- Make sure to have your pets tagged in case they run off in fear
- Keep fireworks away from pets, as they may chew on them
- Sparklers may seem harmless but they burn at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is higher than the temperature that glass melts.
