Orlando Fire Department will install free smoke alarms to neighborhoods as part of Fire Prevention Week. Each year Orlando Firefighters go door-to-door installing smoke alarms to neighborhoods in each Orlando commissioner district. Homeowners within the Orlando City limits can request one smoke alarm with a 10-year lithium battery to be installed free of charge.
Smoke alarms save lives. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. The key message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls.
Orlando Fire Department encourages residents to share via social media that they are participating in fire prevention, and use the hashtag #OFDSmokeAlarmBlitz to generate awareness and community involvement.
