Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 5 City Commissioner Lynum Bring in the Summertime for Hundreds of Teenagers in the Parramore Community

May 5, 2006—Orlando, FL--With summertime jams pumping out of the speakers, Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Daisy W. Lynum rode through the Parramore community on Wednesday, May 3, recruiting teens for the City Teenz summer program.

Mayor Dyer and the City of Orlando offers City Teenz, a program that allows teenagers in Parramore to attend community summer camps for FREE. City Teenz links teenagers with summer camps that allow them to learn first-hand about digital media, participate in football, volleyball, or track & field leagues, or attend workshops at the Mad Cow Theatre on acting and comedy.

This year, the City of Orlando is unveiling its new outreach tool – The City Teenz “Hook It Up” car. The 1983 Plymouth Reliant was donated last year and this year kids living in the Parramore community redesigned the car, hooking it up with a custom radio/CD/DVD player, custom made pearl purple paint job, leather interior, and City Teenz logo on the hood, trunk and doors. The car was unveiled for the first time on May 3 when Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Lynum hit the streets and arrived at the Callahan Neighborhood Center in the new City Teenz car.

“City Teenz provides kids with summer alternatives that allow them to explore areas that could lead to future careers. Many of these kids wouldn’t have the means to attend summer camps, so the City is paying camp fees as well as providing bus passes,” said Buddy Dyer, Orlando Mayor.

Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Lynum recently started the “Parramore Kidz Zone” after a well-known project in New York called Harlem Children’s Zone. Harlem Children’s Zone opens doors of opportunity to Harlem children, while also helping their parents build economic success. City Teenz is just one program available to Parramore children through the Parramore Kidz Zone.
