Parramore Kidz Zone Lock-In to Have Fun and Stay Safe Thanks to Dr. Phillips Charities

WHAT: City of Orlando’s Parramore Kidz Zone (PKZ) is hosting a free Community Lock-Down for Parramore youth ages 13 to 18 from August 1 to 2, 2009. The event will begin on Saturday afternoon with a pool party to herald the end of summer. Later in the evening the participants will “lock down” for the evening by staying all night at the John H. Jackson Community Center and Orlando Downtown Recreation Complex. The agenda will focus on life skills development, and the teens will have opportunities to hear speakers talk about life behind bars, compete for prizes in game, baking and exercise contests, and enjoy barbeques and breakfast.

The lockdown event is one of the latest of PKZ’s efforts to address the need for older youth in the area to have a safe space to spend time in during out-of-school hours. A team of PKZ teens collaborated on the agenda for the event.

Modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, Parramore Kidz Zone launched by Mayor Dyer in 2006, employs creative outreach to engage a critical mass of Parramore’s children and linking them to positive opportunities, including pre-kindergarten education, parenting education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and constructive activities when school is out.

Dr. Phillips Charities, a combination of The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation and Dr. Phillips, Inc., has been supporting the charitable needs of the central Florida community since 1953. The motto of the Dr. Phillips Charities is “to help other help themselves.” Dr. Phillips Charities makes grants to nonprofit organizations that focus on educational programs, children and youth services, social services, cultural programs, and health or rehabilitative programs. The Dr. Phillips Charities has awarded grants in excess of $23 million over the past three years.
