Dr. I Sylvester Hankins Park Recreation Site History

Highlights:

The Dr. I. Sylvester Hankins Park Recreation Site is located on a 15.2-acre park on the corner of John Young Parkway and Columbia Street. The center is centrally located in a residential area and is heavily used by neighborhood youth. Newly renovated in 2003 with a new facility that offers an array of recreation activities, including after school and summer camp programs.

Programs:

Boy Scouts: Boy scouting builds courage, confidence and character. A unique organization where a boy can find: courage by exploring new adventures; confidence by discovering his abilities: character by shaping his values and connections by friendships with other boys and where a boy returns those gifts by making the world a better place, Thursdays from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Camp Orlando Summer Camp (ages 5 - 14): a safe and affordable summer camp program for youth. This five-day week program at 16 City recreation centers offers a variety of activities, including swimming, crafts, outdoor activities, nature programs, exciting field trips (additional expense), computer labs, arts and crafts, and special events. Sites may offer different activities according to the interests of the children who participate in programs.  

Computer Lab (all ages): Offering open lab for research, resume writing, homework, internet access, and other activities.

Girl Scouts: Girl scouting builds courage, confidence and character. A unique organization where a girl can find: courage by exploring new adventures; confidence by discovering her abilities: character by shaping her values and connections by friendships with other girls and where a girl returns those gifts by making the world a better place. Tuesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.


MTP (Middle-School Teen Program) (ages 11 - 14): A diverse teen program for youth in middle school. The program features computers, homework assistance, workshops, regular meetings, service projects, game room activities, art, field trips, and athletic activities. Youth will have opportunities to develop leadership skills and gain cultural diversity awareness through MTP activities. 

OASIS (Orlando After School Is Super) (ages 5 - 10): An after-school program for youth ages 5 to 10 that provides supervised activities for elementary school age children. Children can have access to opportunities such as homework assistance, computer labs, game rooms, cultural arts, pottery, arts and crafts, dance recitals and field trips to local attractions, football, and basketball games.


School Vacation Daze (ages 5- 14): A youth program coinciding with school holidays from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.  Offering fun activities during school breaks, children can enjoy crafts, outdoor activities, game rooms, and much more during the traditional Orange County Public School vacation calendar year. Register at site prior to school holidays.

Youth Quick Start Tennis: Develop coordination while learning tennis drills and increasing your format of these popular sport skills. Wednesdays from 3 - 5 p.m.

Rentals and Public Use:

Dr. I. Sylvester Hankins Park Recreation Site offers the pavilion, multi-purpose field, softball field and tennis courts to rent for events such as birthday parties, showers, practice and so on.
  • Multi-Large Pavilion - $75 per day
  • Softball Field - $25 to $40 per hour - Depends on the time and the day.
  • Tennis Court - $2 per day
Rental Policy and Procedures
  • $100 Damage Deposit Required. Deposit will be refunded 4 to 6 weeks after rental if no damage was found after the rental. Insurance is not refundable and prices range from $31 to $80 and will protect any injuries that may happen during the rental.
  • No Alcoholic Beverages allowed.
  • All rentals must be scheduled 14 days prior to event.
  • All rentals must be paid in full at time of booking
  • Rentals must be cancelled at least 72 hours prior to event to receive a refund
Public Use
  • Hankins Recreation Site does not offer open recreation - the facility is closed for the OASIS and MTP after school programs from August through May from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
