Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center History ●
The Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center offers
something for everyone as well as an amphitheater that is great for
community performances. Come over and enjoy our game room activities
that included: ping-pong, swimming pool, card games, checkers and board games.
Camp Orlando Summer Camp (ages 5 - 14):
a safe and affordable
summer camp program for
five-day week program at 16 City recreation centers offers a
variety of activities, including swimming, crafts, outdoor
activities, nature programs, exciting field trips
(additional expense), computer labs, arts and crafts, and
special events. Sites may offer different activities
according to the interests of the children who participate
Computer Lab (all
Offering open lab for research, resume writing, homework, internet
access, and other activities.
(16 and up): In a
partnership with The Center for Drug Free Living, we offer this
prevention program that provides youth with positive, alternative
late night activities, such as Open Gym basketball, on Saturdays
from 8 pm - midnight.
MTP (Middle-School Teen Program)
(ages 11 - 14):
A diverse teen program for youth in middle school. The program
features computers, homework assistance, workshops, regular
meetings, service projects, game room activities, art, field trips,
and athletic activities. Youth will have opportunities to
develop leadership skills and gain cultural diversity awareness
through MTP activities.
OASIS (Orlando After School Is Super)
(ages 5 - 10): Our mission is to support children
in their social, emotional, and academic development by providing
them with enriching, community-based after-school programs. We do
this by providing academic encouragement and exposing students to a
wide variety of arts, sports, and enrichment activities in a
compassionate and respectful atmosphere. We work extremely hard to
ensure that each student leaves our program everyday with a sense of
pride and accomplishment. We believe in order for children to do
well, they must feel well."This program takes place Monday-Friday
School Vacation Daze (ages 5-
14): Coincides with school breaks from 7:30 a.m.

Well, we have fun activities for your kids! Enjoy crafts, outdoor
activities, game rooms, and much more during the traditional Orange County Public School vacation calendar year.

Smith Center Basketball Academy (S.C.B.A.)
(ages 5-7) - We exist to help each athlete maximize
their basketball potential. In order for you to maximize your
basketball ability, we offer skill training. S.C.B.A. teaches
the proper skills and fundamentals of the game of basketball in
a very fun and competitive way. Our mission is developing player’s
skills through drills. Practice will take place Monday-Thursday
Smith Center Wildcats Football-
Instilling character, sportsmanship, and pride in boys ages 5-14.
The Wildcats are a city league foot ball team lead by head coach
Luther Blackshear. Practices are held Monday- Friday 6:00-7:30 pm.
Smith Center Wildcats Cheerleading-The
Wildcats Cheerleading Program is known for being second to none in
the City of Orlando’s Recreation League, and we continually strive
to be the best at what we do. Our competition teams have won several
local, regional, and state titles in the past years and our
cheerleaders have all improved their skill level regardless of their
prior cheerleading experience. It is our goal to provide a positive
learning environment to help each cheerleader to achieve their
goals. We want every participant to excel not only in all aspects of
cheerleading, but to learn life lessons concerning work ethic,
commitment, dedication, perseverance, friendship, respect and team
Fall High School Basketball League:
This program allows local high schools the opportunity to
prepare for the upcoming basketball season by giving them an early
shot at their competition. Although most of the participating school
are local Orlando high school, each year we have participants from
cities throughout the state of Florida. The League champions walk
away with medals, a trophy to display at their school, and early
Smith Center Kickball League:
This is an adult league, right now available to all women
Central Florida Junior Magic: A
basketball league for boys ages 5-14 years old, that competes
against other city league teams.
Sports Aerobics: Let instructor
Boris Jackson bring out the inner athlete in you! This exercise
program is inspired by sport related skills such as muscular
strength, muscular endurance, agility, and flexibility. The work out
involves both cardio and weight training, but do not be intimidated.
The instructor allows you to work at your own pace and comfort but
will also encourage participants to push their physical limits.
Zumba will change the way you look at
exercise. Try a class and you will see for the first time you will
want to work out. No dance experience is needed. This is not a dance
instruction class; it is more like a party. So come in your workout
clothes, sneakers and bring a bottle of water. Let’s sweat those
calories off dancing to Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton, Cumbia,
Belly dance, Calypso, and etc.
Standing Ovation Talent Group:
Standing Ovation Talent Group is a non-profit, dance company that
utilizes dance, fitness and poise to build the esteem and confidence
of youth within and without the urban community while encouraging
leadership and education for brighter futures.
Young Blacks in Action (Y.B.A.):
The band has an irresistible set of
songs and an attitude that just won't stop until everybody is
strutting their own individual funky stuff across the dance floor.
Practice will be held at the Smith Center Tuesday, Thursday, and
The purpose of this program is to build
community, and seek to change hearts and minds one relationship at a
time. Blossom Girls ARE PROFOUNDLY ABOUT LOVE! This Program assists
females who are in need of positive influences mentally, emotionally
and socially. Blossom Girls will be held every other Saturday from
Clare and the Chocolate Nutcracker:
Clare and the Chocolate Nutcracker is an
urban take on the holiday classic. The event is multi-cultural dance
and musical extravaganza with a contemporary spin based on
“Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker” ballet. It also incorporates more modern
dance styles, including jazz and tap. This program takes place
September – November.
Boys Scouts: Boy scouting builds
courage, confidence and character. A unique organization where a boy
can find: courage by exploring new adventures; confidence by
discovering his abilities; character by shaping his values and
connections through friendships with other boys and where a boy can
return those gifts by making the world a better place
Girls Scouts: Girl scouting builds
courage, confidence and character. A unique organization where a
girl can find: courage by exploring new adventures; confidence by

Aerobics Exercise Class: Every Tuesday
from 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. This class is led by Coach Bo-Jack and is
for ages 18 and up. It is $21.30 a month, which includes access to
the weight room and exercising room
Annual Public Events
Red Tie Celebrity Golf
Extravaganza: This philanthropic
tournament is used to support District 6 programs. Participants get
the chance to play a round of golf with celebrities, business and
civic leaders, and friends.
“Eggcellent” Kid’s Health Fair & Easter Egg
Hunt: Join Commissioner Ings for a fun-filled day of food,
family outdoor activities, and kid’s heath fair. Activities include
health screenings, field games, family entertainment, and Easter egg
Crime Prevention Walk and back to school
give away: Starting from the Washington Shores Shopping
Center on Columbia Street, ending here at the Dr. James R. Smith
Center, Children will walk as stand against violence in exchange for
Rentals and Public Use:
Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center offers certain rooms within the
facility for rent for events such as birthday parties, meetings,
showers, and so on.
Rental Policy and Procedures
- Gymnasium - $65
per hour - Capacity 680
Community Room - $50 per hour -
Multi-Purpose Room - $30 per hour - Capacity 50
Teen Room - $30 per hour - Capacity
Amphitheatre - $25 per hour - Capacity 125
Kitchen - $15 per hour
Softball Field - $25 per hour
before 5pm and $40 per hour after 5pm
$100 Damage Deposit Required. Deposit will be refunded
to 4 weeks after rental if no damage was found after the
Insurance is not refundable
and prices range from $31 to $159 and will protect any injuries that may
happen during the rental.
No Alcoholic Beverages allowed.
All rentals must be scheduled 14 days prior to event.
All rentals must be paid in full at time of booking.
Rentals must be cancelled at least 72 hours prior to event
to receive a refund.
Fitness Center memberships
are available at daily, monthly, six month, and annual
rates. For more information, call the Center.
Computer Lab is open to the public at no
charge during operational hours.
The Computer Lab will close for the
OASIS and MTP
after school programs from August through May from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
